I have to say, driving is not like it was "back in the days." There was no such thing as built-in ipod players, or tv's installed in the back of seats. It seems these days, people look for more gadgets to throw on there vehicle rather than good old standard driving. |

Driving is not a right, it's a privledge.
Most people are idiots, and the idea of making things on a care work "automagically" is to appease the idiots so they don't have to know, so they can feel like its their right.
That's why I bought a 63 Fairlane, because I like it when I have to fiddle with things to make it work. I like knowing that I can yank one wire and most people are too stupid to figure out how to get it started. |

agreed; however, I'm tired of shifting in city traffic. I find that my h's automatic shifts just about when I would although it gives me no feeling for the road. It just goes along by itself. That's why we own an classic car. |

Most of what you mentioned can be switched off if you prefer to drive without it. |

I would say no because now we can go faster harder and more sideways then ever b4, but you dont have to have been doing it for life to be able to feel the adrenaline rush. Also its nice not having to peel your brand new audi S8 from around a tree, and your ribcage from around the wheel.
The old Jag XJ220's used to end up in bushes and lakes all the time cos they were too much for novice people who just bought them cos they were loaded.
If you wanna feel more of the raw mechanics rather than driving a performance calculator then buy vintage. Or get something made by the car company Morgan |

Yes, we have.
While there needs to be a place to test innovative ideas, there also needs to be a place for the perfection of driving skills.
Power steering was bad enough, now drive by wire!
What has all of this gotten us? The current crop of drivers (both professional and street drivers) have no idea of what a car should feel like when it is going through a turn. So they over drive the car that they are in and end up off the road. The primary cause of this is under-prepared drives in over-prepared cars. |

Yes and no. Go drive a 1970's era Porsche 911 sports car back to back with a 2008 model and see which one you prefer. Go drive a 70's Lincoln Continental with todays Lincoln and see how that goes for you. Take it on the freeway and swerve as if you're avoiding something in the road and see how much or little fun that is in the 70's Continental. |

most people who drive cars with all that junk cant drive cars. many years ago i raced a subura turbo in my 1.4 rover. on the straights i watched him leave me behind but i caught up as soon as he hit a corner and thats with all the rubbish he had on the car. i wouldnt buy a car built after 2000 for that reason. i prefer to drive a car than to merely steer it and push a couple of pedals. i wont even tolerate an automatic gearbox because it removes partial control from me |

I am sure they said the same thing about horses when technology brought cars out. Someday we will have something other than cars....and don't say we won't. Sometime in the past they never thought anything would take the place of horses either!
Come on..give technology a good compliment. It does make our lives easier and if you want to enjoy car in sports...be a NASCAR driver...there you have to know how to drive. Thank God we live in a time where people can make things easier for all of us. I know how to drive a stick shift and had TWO cars with it.....but I do love my automatics too. It makes for more enjoyable driving when you don't have to worry about somethings. I love the Lexis that will parallel park for you. I LOVE THAT....and it should be in ALL CARS! :))) I also love my new 2009 Camry with the bluetooth and navigator and smart key ! WOW...how much better can it get? I love my son's new 2009 handicapped van...it has a camera to see as you back up and the navigator and TV's and satellite radio etc. And yes...he has hand controls as he is paralyzed and it is GREAT they can be independent and BE GOOD DRIVERS!
How can you NOT think that doesn't make driving enjoyable? Cars today have such great suspension and hug the road and makes it easier to drive longer periods without getting stressed out.
THAT is BETTER! As for your question of our perception of how well we can actually drive? Listen....if you have a car you drive what you have and you don't have to know how to drive without options. You get the options you want to make it better for you. So we do drive better and our perceptions of better are changed. I would rather have traction control and air bags etc....and feel safer in ice storms...(if you live where I do you NEED THAT)....so the more you can FEEL safer...the better driver you are! |

Yes I suppose you could be right, though our roads may be safer. But as a hobby for people it is slowly becoming nonexistent. I wish that people could learn to drive better though because the more I ride with people the more I notice how bad people can be when it comes to driving. I don't always feel that safe and I want to , I really do. |

in some cars it seems you are the passenger and the car is doing all the work. for some this is best as they cant drive but for others being in control is more fun as long as they know what they are doing |

I don't understand why manufacturers build vehicles that go from 0-60 in 60 seconds if the speed limit on most streets is 45?? |
