I'm an insurance agent, so my answer will have an "insurance slant" to it. Of course you want an older reliable car (definitely not an SUV) like a Toyota or Honda, but it should have air bags too. This will help your insurance rates to not be AS high as they would normally. Because of your age and inexperience, your rates will be high for the first few years, but if you bought a newer or flashier car the rates would be higher. The best bet for your insurance is to see if you can get listed as a driver on your parents' insurance policy. If they will go for that (since their rates will go up also because of the increased risk) it will be cheaper than you getting your own policy. You could offer to pay them the difference in the price for adding you. The insurance companies take many factors into consideration when you get a quote to buy a policy. An older (but not too old, maybe around mid-1990's) car that is reliable is your best bet. |

CONGRATULATIONS. For your first car I would recommend something reliable and cheap. I wouldn't suggest getting anything too new - when you first past your test you think you're a brilliant driver but usually you're not! (well, going on my own experience anyway). Something small, cheap and reliable and as new as you can afford without straining yourself financially as don't forget the insurance may be expensive. Enjoy. |

Congrats!! I think the best option is to buy a small size car, any in the range on 1 litre engine capacity. These kind of cars are easy to handle, easy to control and insurance will cost less. Plus they have good re-sale value!! So when you get confident to move on to a bigger car, you can sell this off for a good price. I got myself a Ford Fiesta when i passed the driving test. |

It depends on how much money you have .
I'm guessing not loads in which case a small car up to 1300
would be a good start
it will have good millage to the gallon and the insurance would be lower as the first insurance is sometimes more than the car you bye.
the maintenance will always be hi so make sure its mot and taxed recently.
PS do a course in mechanics if you can .save you a fortune in the long run have fun.
remember fuel tax may increase again in the next budget |

Look for a used Taurus from Ford, or a 4 door Honda sedan, also used. They are fairly reliable if you get a decent one, and your insurance agent won't charge so much. Avoid 2 door cars, avoid PT Cruisers and Mustang types, avoid convertibles. |

Citroen Saxos seem to be nice little cars to start off in, I used to clean Saxo courtesy cars for an insurance firm, and they handle really well. Try www.autotrader.co.uk |

Wow,well done you ! The best car for you would probably be a small car first,my mechanic friend recommended a Ford Fiesta, mainly because the insurance and tax are cheaper also they dont cost a lot to fix because the parts are easy to obtain as opposed to foreign cars.
The first one i got was 3 yrs old and it was great,Im now on my 4th,brand new, never had a minutes problem with them ! |

Congratulations! Try a few test drives before you decide on a car. I learnt to drive in a mini, then took my test in a clio then bought a saxo. I drove quite a few others but found little cars were easier to park! |

depends on where you live, but if you live in the states, go with something that is used and reliable like a honda or a toyota. These cars will last you for the next couple of years while you get situated and save up to buy a better car. I drive a honda accord and it is still running. after 225 000 miles. So go with an accord or a civic. Its reliable and insurance is cheap. Also if you get in an accident or something breaks down, the replacement parts are dirt cheap. |
