Hi my car is registered in my name but insurance on mothers...?
|
Hi people,
my car is registered in my name and insurance on mothers. I know it is not valid so was wondering what should i do because my road tax runs out end of december. Post office won`t let me buy road tax if the vehicle document and insurance certificate in two different names. Silly me was going to register car in mums name but the person i bought the car from in july put mine down. Shall i tell insurance company and ask for my name to be on the policy will they agree, Please help i am in such a rut
xx Additional Details the insurance i currently have runs out in march. Will i get a refund? or can i just say i want to be a policy holder and transfer..

When you got the insurance they would have asked, 'Are you the registered owner and keeper of the vehicle and you would have had to have said yes - you have lied and are committing an offence so do something quick! Change the car into your mums name or the insurance into yourS! DO it now - if you get stopped by police youre in big trouble! |

just register it in your mums name then get you mum to insure it for you and her it will work out cheaper ...that's what i do !!!!!!!!!! |

Whoever uses the car most should be the insured and if this is your mum then you will have to change registration over. If you were to change the insurance to your name when it is your mum who uses the car, then your insurance will be void if a claim is made, this is called fraud, especially if you do it and get cheaper insurance. The best bet is to change the registered user. |

If the policy is in you mothers name then add yourself as a driver or transfer the policy into your name. If you cancel early to rewrite as your own policy then there will be a refund of unused premium. |

Tony M - the only exemption for the same name rule is married couples, common law couples and lease vehicles.
Mary - if you are the main driver of the car and it is essentially "your" car, it should be registered and insured in your name. By putting it in your mums name you are commiting fraud by having a "fronted" policy and your insurer will not pay out if you have a claim.
SO - what you have to do is contact the insurance company (your mum will probably have to do the talking due to the Data Protection Act) and say that you are becoming the reg owner and keeper and can they either transfer the policy to your name or cancel it and start another.
Yes there may be a cancellation fee and you premium will be higher, but its the only way to get tax and stay legal
Feel free to contact me if you need any more advice. |

The ownership of the vehicle and the person insured don't need to be the same. My partner is the registered owner and I am the main insured driver. The same situation applies with company cars. The lease company owns the car, but the drivers company takes out the insurance. As long as the Insurance document has the correct registration plate for the car you are trying to tax there should be no problem. Go to another post office for your tax! |

Simple you return the vehicle document to DVLA and request to put it in your mums name. |

Legally the title of the insurance policy and the title/registration of the vehicle should be the same. the insurance company needs to evaluate you as the owner and presumably primary driver of this vehicle when deciding whether to offer you insurance and what premium to charge. some states are more strict about enforcing this than others. however, if there is a loss the insurance company may either deny the claim or pay the claim and then non-renew your mother which i'm sure she wont be too happy about. you should either call your current company or any other company you would like to apply for insurance in your name only. |
