My mother came home from work yesterday and tells me that someone hit her car and left while she was at work and then drove off (she works at a hospital and her car was in the parking garage). She didn't see the accident, she just saw the damages on her car and it was obvious it was a hit and run. I asked her why she didn't call the police and she said she didn't want anything to go on her insurance. She has a really good driving record and she thinks they are going to hold the accident against her even though it was a hit and run. She says that they can say she "parks in areas that are unsafe". She works in Aventura, FL... which is right near Miami, FL. Not the safest... but still. I then suggested calling hospital security, and she did, but they were already gone by that time. So she's back at work today, and I don't know if she's talked to anyone. But anyway,what should be done? Can we still call the police? Would they be able to find out who did it by looking at the garage video cameras? If they did find out who did it, would my mom's insurance still have it on record as her "getting into an accident"?

most hospitals have very good closed circuit TV and video that's where she should start, reporting it to the police will not affect her insurance, if her car was not moving it's not her fault no matter where she parks, hit and run in FL is a misdemeanor punishable by jail and fines. |

Yes you can still call the police, and I would do so as soon as possible. Hospital security should be able to see if their cameras recorded the accident. However even if it did there may not be enough information to help identify who did it. Hit and run claims are not chargeable claims (they do not cause your rating to change) as long as they are reported to the police, however they are covered under collision coverage and is subject to the deductible. |

if she's in the parking garage, that is where she is supposed to be, and the company won't 'hold it against her' unless she gets 3 or more of the same type, and even then, she's in the garage, so... unless it's a $25 bump, claim it, because that's why you pay for insurance. She is not at fault. |

Gambit is right. Tell your mom to get a police report and call her insurance company ASAP. If she has collision coverage on the car, they will pay to fix her car (less her deductible) right away. Then the insurance company will try to track down the at-fault person. If they can, the at-fault person will pay for the total damages and your mom will get her deductible back. None of this will make her rate go up. |

Yes you can still call the police and make the report. Most likely she will have to go to the station to complete it.
Your mother would have to contact her work to see if there are any cameras in the parking garage that could have captured the incident and determine who caused the damage.
If your mother files a claim with her insurance, it will be on her CLUE report that a claim was filed. |
