Hit and run - question i want to know - UK?

if you report a car that has hit your car and drove off while parked on the road outside your house how long does it take after the registration has been reported to the police and insurance company to catch the driver - is it done there and then or what happens

information from UK drivers and people only please

In a perfect scenario, almost immediately. The police national computer will have the owners details on file and all patrols informed to stop the vehicle. However, was it the registered owner who was driving? They may well be on the phone,at the same time, reporting the theft of the vehicle.
Hope you get a result, if it turns out the driver was uninsured, you can claim to the British Motor Insurers as they have a fund to deal with such events.

i dont think there is a time limit - they may just ask why you didnt report it at the time for which you will have to explain.

If the accident happened whilst you were on holiday for example but a neighbour witnessed it then you couldnt report that untill you got home.

Im not sure how long it would take the police to catch the driver. there are databases now that bring the ifo up immediately when they enter a reg ie the owner, if it insured taxed etc

Good Luck, i hope you catch the nasty and get your brum brum fixed

With no witnesses it's extremely unlikely anything would happen. Police will say they will investigate but in my experience nothing happens.

I think it is an offence to leave the scene of an accident so the police will chase up the driver quite quick if they have the reg number. Once the driver is found you will have his details from the police re insurance. Be prepared in finding that he may have no insurance and that might be the reason why he took off in the first place, good luck

When a situation like this occurs and it is reported to the police, the details of the car are circulated to the officers on patrol and to other stations, and the police are told to look out for the car. The length of time it takes to apprehend the driver would depend on if the car had been hidden or was being used, and where. If you have given the whole registration of the car to the police they are able to find out the name and address of the driver provided that the information is up to date and the car hadn't been stolen. There are many factors to take into consideration.

The driver has committed an offence by driving off and not reporting the accident so the Police should take action as well as your insurer - getting vehicle/driver details from the registration is almost instantaneous - They would have known before you finished your telephone call. The Police should have given you a crime report reference number and you can chase them up with this. Photos of the scene/damage are also important. But really you need an independent witness to sew up your claim. However, it was probably a stolen/illegal car anyway.

sorry, but there is very little chance - if any - that the police will trace the driver, they simply too busy sorting out more urgent crimes and will tell you to let your insurance co. to sort.

the insurance co will make efforts to locate the other car but 8/10 these efforts prove unsuccessfull.

It depends if they can trace the registered keeper of the car. It could be days, weeks, or even longer.

Not sure if it works the same, but I was in my car when some silly woman who couldn't drive reversed into me. She then drove off at speed. I managed to get her reg no.
The police were very helpful. She hit me in August, it took a while, but by the following March she'd been to court twice and charged with driving without due care and attention, and failing to stop and report an accident. She eventually admitted liability and received 6 points, and a hefty fine plus costs.
Stupid thing is, it was my 'dog car' she hit, and I really couldn't care less. If only she'd got out to say sorry, I'd have told her it happens to us all, and nevermind.
Good luck my friend.
