How can I force previous owners to turn over mailbox keys?

I recently bought a townhome and closed 2 weeks ago. The previous owners never gave me the mailbox key with the set of keys. They said they would give it to my neighbor and never did. Then they said they would mail it to my real estate agent, and never did. I'm moving in soon and know I have mail already going there. Is there a way I can force them to turn the key over ASAP. I can't wait for them anymore.

In my state the USPS does not re-use the previous keys on a lock box style mailbox. All new tenants must have the locks changed. Since the USPS is federal, that law is most likely the same everywhere.
You do not want to use the same mailbox lock/keys that someone else had anyway. If they still had a copy, then they could get into your mailbox. Have the USPS replace the locks on your mailbox for security reasons if nothing else.
Personally, I would not reuse the locks on the home either. I would also replace them or get the existing locks re-keyed.
When I bought my home, the first thing I did was replace all of the locks. Keys are too easy to duplicate & I didn't want to worry about coming home at 2 in the morning to see the previous owners drunk daughter making out with her bf on my sofa since she still had a key to what is now MY home. |

Call the post office and have the box re-keyed. It costs about $15 and he will give you two keys on the spot. |

Tell the Post Master at your local post office. I have a box in a community box section the postman says they change locks every time someone moves in. |
