umm that's illegal, and pretty easy to detect.. getting all the air bags to blow will usually total a vehicle but why would you wanna do that?

Well, there are lots of ways to total a car but you need to ask yourself this: is insurance fraud worth the risk of having to marry some guy in prison named Bubba and toss his salad for the next five years?
Dude, insurance companies have whole DIVISIONS set up to combat fraud. If you are stupid enough to do it then you are damn well stupid enough to not get caught....

If your car happened to roll into a body of water and get submerged, it would most likely be totaled out. I would then buy it from your insurance company and sell it for parts. ...I own a auto salvage/used parts business.

Totaling a vehicle, or anything insured, is damage costing more to repair to original usable condition than what the replacement value of the unit/car is worth. Totaling damage would be higher cost items damaged enough to overcome the original value of a vehicle.. The original value of a vehicle can be found on kbb.com . The cost of repairs can be found at a repair facility specializing in whatever is damaged.
