How can you tell from the new style number plates where a car is from?

my registration starts NA so how could I find out where that is from? I know the first two letters tell the police/DVLA where the car was registered and then the next two numbers are the year but how can you tell from the first 2 letters where a car is from???

The third element of a number is a random three letters*.

This effectively works the same as the numbers in the old system,

e.g. In the old system a garage would be issued say, Y123 to 156ABC

In the new system the garage would (thoeretically) get say NA58ABC to ABY

In reality continuous letter combinations are not issued as there is a rule that the 1st and 3rd elements cannot end in the same letter, e.g NA58BYA. These are added to the 'cherished' marks list.

Of course the whole thing gets confused when a company buys a number of cars or vans. They usually award the contract to the best bidder and as A large Ford dealer in the North East is probably the biggest for contract orders it is not unusual to find cars in Southern England for example, with North Area (Newcastle/Stockton) marks that have never been anywhere near the North of the country.

* If you are still following my thread you, like me, are probably trying to understand how these can be 'Random'. If anyone can find an answer to that I'd like to know.
