Call your insurance agent, cancel the insurance. You will have to turn in your tags to the DMV as well.

Each state is different.
In California, IF YOU WANT TO KEEP THE CAR WITH NO INSURANCE, you must tell the DMV, so they won't suspend your registration. And there are 2 ways: NON OP or NON USE

Put the car in Non Op if you're not going to drive the car for a year or more. Fill out form REG 102 Certificate of Non Op. Your registration is canceled and every year they send you an invitation to put the car back on the road. Registration must be current before you can non op a car. When you put it back on the road, you'll only pay the current year fees dues (whereas non use pays every year. That's why it doesn't make sense to "Non Use" for more that a year)

Put the car in NON USE if you're not going to drive the car for less than a year. Fill out form REG 5090 Affidavit of NON USE. Your registration is NOT canceled. You continue to pay registration, but you get NO tags.

In each case, you are promising that you won't drive or park the car on public roads (even in front of your house) Proof of Insurance is not required for either choice.

You can still sell a car that is in Non op or non use status. But the buyer won't be able to drive it home until it's been smogged, has insurance and current registration fees paid up.

DO NOT just stop paying your premiums like one or more people have suggested & get canceled for non-payment.

Doing that will place you at a higher risk & can make your insurance very expensive, even hard to get, when you get a new car & need to get coverage again.

Just call your agent & explain the situation. If the car is non-repairable, your state may offer cheap non-operational insurance so you can still maintain insurance & that will make it easier (and cheaper) to go back to legal coverage once you purchase a new car. If this coverage is not available in your state, then they can cancel your policy until you get another vehicle.

Also, check with your DMV prior to canceling your insurance to see if you are required by law to surrender your license plate(s) if you cancel your insurance if this is the only vehicle you currently own.

Call Farm Bureau and tell them your situation and cancel your policy.

Some insurance companies require proof that you have insurance with another company before canceling (because it's illegal to drive without insurance).

If this is your only car you have insurance under, then you won't be covered if you drive someone else's car. Basically from what I understand, you'll have to have your own insurance or be on someone's policy to be covered.

And also when you get insurance in the future, you might be considered a high risk driver (and the rates will be more) because all of the insurance companies may think you been driving without insurance, so it's important to tell your insurance agent about your situation.

DR_Layne has it almost right. Turn in your tags first. In some states the insurance companies notify the state almost immediately when you cancel your insurance. If the DMV records show an active registration you will face a stiff fine and license suspension.

stop paying it they drop you... you know some states require you to turn in plates if you have no insurance which is nothing but a couple screws insurance you can call or just stop paying
