How do I find out who the car is registered to?

My mom passed away last year and she had a car that isn't paid off yet. My grandmother (her mother) cosigned the car note. I'm not sure if the car is considered my mother's asset, and thus become part of her estate, or if it's now considered my grandmother's asset. Who do I contact to find out who the car is registered to? The DMV? Any advice will he appreciated....

I am the executor of the estate. I want to know how to find out this information. I know I may sound ignorant, but I've never done this before.

In California: Your lender will have the title. Contact them. They may want a copy of the death certificate.
This may be a question for your tax guy (You'll be seeing him soon anyway, right April 15 and all)
Who ever is on the title, is also considered the registered owner(s). Hopefully the title was vested in "OR" and not "AND". It's just easier and simpler, fewer forms, if only one signature is required.
Your lender will be able to remove your mom's name from the title and put just your g'ma's name on it. This may be a good time to add your name as well, for future convenience sake. |

The executor on your mothers estate will be able to answer any question regarding assets of the estate, and who those assets went to. Usually the first thing a will says is "pay all obligations out of the assets of the estate" so if there was a will, it may be free and clear at this point. But no, the DMV can't tell you, so contact the executor. |
