How do I get rid of this Lien on my car?

I just recently moved to Rhode Island for a few months for school. I have sold my car which is registered in New York to someone here in rhode island. When he went to the DMV to register it they said he cant transfer it because the title has a lien on it.
This car is fully paid off and i bought it 2 months ago from a friend in NY.
We registered it and everything with no problems at all in NY but here in RI they wont let him because of the lien
Does anyone know how to get rid of this lien, and also we don't know where the original owner of this car is.

you need to do a title search for that vehicle. it could be that someone owned the car, sold it to someone else, and didn't pay off the original lien on the car. NY may not have done a records search for the car, that's probably why it didn't have any "flags" thrown in. I suggest going to the DMV and asking them for help. They're the professionals when it comes to selling cars.

contact local superior court, someone or some company has put a lien on car for a overdue debt. be glad they did not put lien on bank account. collection agencies use this tactic to force a payment, they must first get a judgement hence calling superior court they can give you info as to who it was, if there is no judgement have previous owner check could be paperwork was not completed from courts. oh sorry you want to check with your county superior court, in NY and RI

Well, If the vehicle has been paid off like you said,then when you did pay it off you should have gotten a form MV901 from the financial institution. You didn't? You have to call the bank and request it. Now, If your NOT the person that the loan WAS in, the bank/finance co will give you nothing. Now, you won't need the title back from your friend, you just give him the form. Also, If the bank mailed the form to you and It has been "Misplaced" Then what you will need is a 'Letter Of No Interest" from the bank. On this letter It Must have the Year & Make & Vehicle ID Number as well as the name of the person who held the loan. If there was 2 people on the lien then make sure the form and/Or Letter has the name of the person on the title face (This should be the first name. Like this: Mrs Jane Doe & Mr. John Doe. If Jane is the first person on the title. Enough. Get this and you'll have no problem. The reason that RI rejected It is because, In States that send the titles to a Bank they MUST have a clean title to start with. In New York, the title goes to the car owner and the aforementioned MV901 goes to the bank. And you can conceivably just sell the car without paying off the loan. As long as It isn't a Car Dealer. Good luck & Call this Bank tomorrow. Also, your friend who paid It off, If he did get the release form and didn't take It to the DMV for a clean title. You will not have a clean car. DMV has no way of knowing.
