How do I sign a title over to someone?

My uncle gave me a car and the title, but didnt sign it. He told me to sign his name before I take it to the dmv but I have no clue where to sign. Is there a site where I can see a sample of a title to make this a little easier?

he is the "owner", "seller", "title holder"
you are the "buyer" "recipient"
You have to be careful about the exchange because most times the DMV or notary wants to be present for both signatures.
Here is some info from a DMV website:
http://www.dmv.org/nv-nevada/title-transfers.php
A title is a document proving ownership, and all vehicle sales include a necessary step of transferring or setting up a title in the new owner's name. Without an official title certificate, you will not be able to register your car.You don't need to have a driver's license to be a title holder.
Title Transfers from Private-Party Sales
When you purchase a car from a private party, the previous owner should sign over the title to you. If he or she does not have the original title, a duplicate must be obtained from the DMV. The owner of record (the person selling the car) must apply for that duplicate before the sale can be finalized.
As a buyer, don't accept terms that do not include a title. A bill of sale alone will not be acceptable when it comes to registering your new wheels.
Signing over the title means filling out the buyer and seller information on the back of the actual certificate. Both you and the previous owner will need to sign the document. |

Should be a space on the back to sign it. Although I would suggest making your uncle sign his own name on it bc that's forgery if he doesn't and technically you'll have stolen the car. |

Take the title, and your Uncle, to the nearest DMV office and ask them what you need to do. In some states a car gifted to a relative is free of taxes.
He needs to sign his own name of course, you can't do it for him. If he can't write, they will accept his "mark" and notarize it for you. |

Unfortunately, it is illegal to sign someone else's name to a title and you will likely be unable to get the vehcle registered without your Uncle present to verify his identity as the true owner and seller of the car. |

He should sign it...anywho...
On the back, PRINT his name JUST AS IT APPEARS on the front of the title-then sign it that way underneath....your uncle is the SELLER.
Then you will do the same on the right side with YOUR name....you are the BUYER.
There will be no LEINHOLDER if no bank or lending institution is involved.
FINALLY-DON'T MESS IT UP....it's a real pain if you do. |

Your best bet would be a pen - that's what I usually use to sign. |

Why doesn't your uncle want to release interest himself, signing for him is forgery. At any rate, there should be a spot either on the front or back of the title, where it says "seller releases interest", or "seller signs here". If the car is less than ten years old, the mileage must be disclosed, as well. You also say he is gifting the car to you, to transfer the title to your name, you will need a written statement from your uncle, stating that he is gifting the car, and that no money is transferring hands. Without a statement, you will pay sales/use tax on the fair market value of the car. Since you need a statement, why not have your uncle release interest on the title, at the same time. |

It really depends on the state that issued the title. You need to be very careful to sign it in the right place. In some states (IL, NE, IN, CA) the first assignment is on the front of the title. In others it is on the back of the title.
It is very important that you sign in the correct place. Generally, both the buyer and seller have to sign and print their names. Be extremely careful when filling out the title, any erasures, scribbles, line outs, or white out will void the title.
If I were you I would call an Auto Auction, or a car dealership in your area and ask for the title department. They are usually very helpful and it would be much faster and more human than calling dmv. |

Car titles vary by state, go to your bank and they will help you for free, or go to his if you don't have one, most have a notary
You would sign under purchaser
his info is under transferee or previous owner |
