How do you find out if someone that hit you has insurance?

the insurance information i was given after someone hit my car turned out to be fake. my insurance company called his company but was told that the policy # does not exist. so is there a way i can find out through DMV or somewhere his true insurance information?

if i can't find it, would this qualify as uninsured since i have uninsured drivers coverage? it would waive my deductible and it would pay for the injuries i suffered in the accident but only if he really is uninsured.
Additional Details
yes i have his driver license #, plate #, home address, phone#.... verified his address thru whitepages.com.

uninsured coverage will waive the deductible i would have to pay to fix my car if he's uninsured so im hoping he really is unisured. but how do i find out is the question and if my insurance company will consider him uninsured.

YOU do not have to do anything (since you are responsible enough to have insurance). Your insurance company will attempt to find insurance on the other vehicle (normally through the DMV or something called the CLUE system which has info on previous claims). If they cannot find insurance, they will put your uninsured motorist insurance into action. That is what you pay your premium for.

Your insurance people should be finding this infromation out for you. Do you have an adjuster? That is the person who should be able to answer these questions and recoup any losses for you.

Technically speaking no one is alowed to release that information to anyone but the insured.

You can somehow find the owner information (that would include his insurance co) by running a report with the license plate.

Get his insurance co info and file a claim with his company.

You'll get a "denial letter" from them stating no insurance is there to use.

Get this denial letter and file a claim with your insurance company.

No deductibles should apply, since it would be considered a uninsured motorist claim.

But you have to PROVE the guy was uninsured, hence the denial letter from his company.

See if your insurance company can do this for you!

Your insurance company can get the plate run through DMV. More likely than not, he just wrote down a wrong number or something.

YOU cannot get the information from the dmv, due to privacy laws.

If he does not have an active policy, then he is uninsured. There are two types of uninsured motorist coverages - liability, covering your bodily injury, and physical damage - which would pay to fix your car.

Your insurance company will figure this out for you, it should only take a couple days. Sit tight!

Talk to your insurance company. If she is being so truly uncooperative that you simply cannot find her insurance information, it should be covered under your uninsured portion of your policy. Get your settlement through your own company and let them sue her.

He doesn't file a report with the police and have him arrested/ticketed for no insurance. Sue him right away also.

If you have a license plate number than you may be able to receive info about the insurance. I am assuming u do not have that information and no uninsured motorist does not cover property damage it would only covers medical expensive if someone uninsured was to hit and injure you or someone else in the vehicle with you if you have collison on your policy then you insurance will cover it but you will have to pay your deductible you need to put a claim in to your insurer and as a licensed insurance rep you can trust my advise

Go to a car dealership in your state and have them do a VIN# or plate# inquiry through their CVR system. This is a system that they use to transfer and issue registration on a vehicle. Hopefully you know someone who works there or it might be difficult to get them to do it for you. If there is a lein on the vehicle, the lein holder will show up on the title and, you can contact them because any lein holder is required to know the insurance company. Of course, you will have to think of your own way to get this info from them. I would also file a complaint and tell the police. That's fraud. If you happen to live in Wisconsin, I can run a VIN# for you.

Easiest way would be to read your notes you took at the time of the scene. Whenever there is an accident, you must exchange information including your insurance company and policy number. If you can't find your notes, read the police report, it should be on there also. If you have neither (you should have) then ask your insurance for assistance in obtaining the information for you.

If indeed the information you were given was bogus, that would constitute fraud and I would hope the insurance would work with the police to investigate and have the person arrested.

If you aren't getting cooperation from anyone, you might want to consider talking to an attorney. Sometimes that will start things moving in the right direction.

I'm not sure where you are, but in some states your insurance company can run a tag trace and obtain the insurance information. It will only be as current as the last time he updated with the DMV.

If he has insurance and your company starts leaning on him saying they will pursue him directly, I can't imagine that he wouldn't respond to advise the real info on his insurance. In all likelihood he's lying, and will dodge them, and you'll have to make a UM claim.

The provisions of unisured motorist vary from state to state. File a police report, first of all, since it's usually needed to use UMPD. When you call the police dept, ask if you can file for felony hit and run while you're at it. The police will try and track him down, because legally they can't release anything they find on him to you for privacy laws. No one is going to randomly run a tag trace and give you someone's info.
