How do you get 'NO CLAIMS DISCOUNT' on car insurance?

Should my insurer isuue me with this if i have not claimed or do i have to buy some form of certificate?

Don't buy anything!
All reputable insurers will pass on your no claims details for free even if you are changing insurers! |

They will send you proof of it if you ask. You get it by not claiming for a year, then another year etc. It will say on your renewal notice how much you have too.
PS. You don't pay for it, you earn it by not claiming. This will give you a discount on future years insurance.
EDIT Also if you change your insurer you will need proof of NCD earned so don't throw away your renewal notice from your previous insurer, you will have to send it to your new one, |

It is shown on your invitation to renew policy letter. Handy to keep this in case you want to change insurers. You dont buy anything and you do not normally get any form of certificate.
Just a comment about 2 previous replies - I am in UK - in 40 years driving i have never made a claim and have been with my current insurers for last 15 years. I have never been given a certificate from any insurer. Only the mention of NCD being allowed on the invitation to renew. However, if you were changing insurers they would confirm your NCD to your new insurers. |

As far as I know all car insurances will give a discount when you renew your insurance for another year provided you have not made a claim in the previous year and will go on doing so for some 5 or in some cases 7 years. It is automatic when you renew. If you make a claim some insurance companies will not give any discount the following year. With my insurance company you just lose one year |

Once you cancel your policy with them, they will provide you with a certificate which you pass on to your new insurer. You may need to request it from them though. It is your property, so the insurer should not make you pay for it. |

It depends on the insurer. You just tell your insurer how many years claim free you have on record when you ask for a quote, and they give you a discount. Sometimes you then have to send proof of no claims, others the insurer will know through links between insurers.
As for proof, that varies too! My renewal note on my last insurer had the number of years no-claims written on it. But my wife was sent a certificate by her insurer when she said she wasn't continuing the policy. You shouldn't have to pay for a certificate of proof. |

Itsautomatic. If you dont claim you get a discount when you are sent your renewal notice... This can be transferred to another insurer if you decide to change companies... |

when your policy is due for renewal, you will have a renewal notice. your no claims bonus is noted on that. if you swap to a new company they will usually ask for a copy of this. others will just ask for the company name and policy number and will ring them up themselves to confirm the bonus. you dont need to pay a penny. |

you take out insurance for a year if you do not put a claim in then that is a years no claims.so the more years you go with out claiming the more no claim bonus you have and the cheaper the insurance |

As the other answers, but, you could have a claim, provided all the monies are recovered from the other party you will still be give the NC bonus. The other point, an accident may not be your fault, but, if the other driver was not insured or not traced, then you would find that NC bonus was not awarded. In short, it is generally a No claim bonus as opposed to a No Blame bonus. |
