My boyfriends mother is signing the title of his car over to him but how does he go about this? Things are a little rocky so I'm just trying to make this as easy as possible for everyone involved. Is it something that can be done on the weekend? He is not buying it from her. Will it cost him anything to do so?

This depends on what state you live in. Here is a simple guide http://www.dmv.org/title-transfers.php . For my state Georgia here are the guidelines.
:
1. Complete, sign, and date the title. The current owner is the “seller” and the new owner is the “buyer.”
2. Make sure the title reflects the correct odometer reading if the vehicle is less than 10 years old.
3. Have the title notarized.
4. Complete a Title/Tag Application.
5. Present proof of a certificate of vehicle emission inspection if the county requires it.
6. Visit the County Tax Commissioner’s tag office with the above paperwork and fee of $18 to complete the transfer.
NOTE: The previous vehicle owner can’t transfer the license plate along with the title. The new owner must register the vehicle in his name, which includes taking care of the license plate. |

It depends on where you live. Most states both your bf and his mom just sign the title. Then mail it into the state title department,usually the DMV. Some states this must be done within a certain amount of time after the title is signed. If that is the case don't it until you are ready to get the new title.
After it is signed over to him he will want to insure and register it (unless mom is keeping the insurance, more than likely he will still want to register it.) Again, some states require the registration and insurance to be in the same name. |

In Calif.:
She's signs the front of the title. (it's paid for, correct?)
He fills out the back.
He can do this at a DMV or a AAA Auto Club
A Family transfer costs $15
You don't need to get it smogged or pay USE TAX on a family transfer.
You must sign Statement of Facts REG 256 for the exemptions
Mom doesn't have to be with him to do this.
He will leave with a registration in his name for the car's glove compartment and the new title will be mailed to him in 3-4 weeks. (don't keep title in car) |
