I bought a car for my daughter in california.. I am keeping the title until she pays off the car. She drove the car back to montana where she lives. How does she register the car in her name when I have the title..

you !!! need to transfer title with Montana DMV, keep her as reg owner, put yourself as lienholder. You will be holding MT title instead of CA title and she can drive in Montana. |

You are entered in the Lien Holder area of the title.
The title will go to your address when it is reissued.
When the car is to be sold or she pays it off, you will sign the release in the Lien Holder section. |

The title will have both names on it, with you as the lien holder. When she pays it off, you will have to sign off the title. The title can be held anywhere, but the registration will be done in Montana, again with you as the lien holder and she as the provisional owner. |

She has to have the title or you have to have a power of attorney to register it for her! |

You can't "keep the title until she pays off the car." You can add your name as LEGAL owner and hers as REGISTERED owner and then she will have the title, showing her clear interest in the vehicle, and she will be able to register it and get the plates. |
