It probably depends on what state you are in. Where I live you automatically have coverage under your current policy for 14 days.

24 hours. If it's the weekend you have until Monday and if you have insurance on a current vehicle it will in most states carry over until Monday when you can get the proper paperwork and insurance for your car.
