How long does it take to pass the UK Driving Licence?

A few people have summed it up above really well, and therefore I will just 2nd (or probably more like 6th) what they have put by saying that there is NO way anyone can give you an approximate number of lessons to pass the driving test, or a timescale - but you can use a bit of common sense in working that one out - if you have one lesson a month, it's gonna take you a lot longer than if you have 2-3 lessons a week!

I have had pupils pass after about 20 hours (but they were bloody good mind) and I have pupils still with me, and still nowhere near ready, after nearly a year of driving!

One hint I will give you, is get studying for your theory test, as this is what holds people up - have had numerous pupils ready for their practical test, unable to take it, due to them not studying for their theory test, after I told them weeks before!!

How long is a piece of string.

totally depends on your ability. i have heard of someone passing in 7 hours of lessons, i personally needed about 60. took me about 10 weeks

It varies considerably. I know a girl who had 2 hours of lessons and passed her test on her 17th birthday. (She claims she watched her father drive.) I know a woman who's been failing her test regularly for over 20 years.

Official statistics show that it takes an average of 45 hours professional tuition plus 25 hours private practice to pass the UK driving test. Of course, that means many people take far less and many take far more!

How long it takes from beginning to end depends on how many hours tuition you have per week.

On average 20-50 lessons. It depends on how good you are. You used to be able to take quick week long courses with the test at the end...I am not sure if that still happens.

I can't remember but usually your instructor will let you know when you're ready (if he/she's not trying to milk you for more lessons).

I passed 3rd time but for the first two exams I had the same doggone examiner! I couldn't believe it!

On my second test I got into the car with a head full of woe, knowing that my chances of success were little, with such a miserable, grumpy examiner. All he did was look at girls in mini-skirts while I was driving.

And after driving perfectly and the test finished he said exactly what I expected, "Sorry, you've failed"

Same guy in two exams, now that's a laugh. I should have hijacked the car and sped to the nearest field and just done loads of donuts till we ran out of petrol... See his sorry face...

But I say someone who passes 2nd or 3rd time is a better driver. Everyone I know who has passed first time has rapped their car, seriously. I reckon you're that bit more careful if you pass later.

Don't worry and do your best, respect other drivers, cyclists and pedestrians, even though they won't respect you sometimes. Patience, alertness and knowledge of the highway is key.
