Champagne suspended a 5th time.

You don't get any time now. It has to be taxed on time. |

Before the system was fully computerized you used to get a week or two's period of grace. Not any more. Come the 1st of the month that the tax is due, if it's not taxed or SORN, an £80 fine is on its way to you. (And you still have to pay the tax.) |

you have to renew it before it runs out i think |

You get 14 days to renew or declare SORN before an automatic fine is generated.
However, if you use your car during these 14 days (or it is parked on a public road) you can be prosecuted for failure to display a valid tax disc. The 14 days only applies if the car is kept off the road. |

you dont
it used to be 14 days
but now you get a reminder 2 weeks before so as far as dvla are concerned thats enough warning |

NONE there are no days of grace, You can be done the day after for not displaying a current disc,,, You should renew tax in the 10 days before expiry, So get the car off the road until taxed .Do not use it.. If long term go SORN |

Just renew it, you don't get any days grace. It is easy to do online and you dont have to show your mot or queue at the post office.
You car can be towed and crushed if you do not get tax.
If you are struggling to pay for the tax, sell the car and get a bus pass. |

basically, you don't. The DVLA operates a 'continuous registration' system, which means that legally, your car must be taxed or SORN'd at all times.
'It's in the post' doesn't work! |

none that's why they send you a reminder letter at the start of the month
they could give you a fine even if its a day over as your on the road illegally, they have got really strict with it recently so be quick |
|

Countess

Listen to Stann, unless you can get it off road and fill in the SORN form, you could easily be fined and its not worth it. |

There is no period of grace. If you're strapped for cash until after the tax runs out, then you need to do the SORN, park the car off the public road and not use the car until you have taxed it, otherwise a fine. The DVLA will know because it's computerised, and the fine will come in the post after a few weeks.
Doing a SORN is free. |

On a consecutive licence, you are given 14 days grace as far as dvla are concerned. However, there is also a police offence of failing to display. |
