After 11 years of error free driving and on-time insurance payments, I managed to back into someone in a parking lot going about 1 mph.
My car was NOT damaged, except for a scraped bumper sticker. The other driver had cosmetic damage only, and being the good guy that I am I gladly helped her navigate the insurance claim. I figured that if it was my car that was dented, I would want it taken care of. Do onto others, right?
Anyway, the total payout of the claim was $556. That's roughly seven months of my premium payment.
So, how much can I expect to see added to my yearly premium? 10%? 20%? more?
Also, how long will it take to "recover" back to my previous rate?
Finally, considering that I've paid this company much more than $556 over the years, how much of an increase should I accept before I start looking for a new carrier?
This is technically my second insurance company - I was on my parents policy until I was 22 (I'm 27 now). So I haven't been with them forever, but I am not ready to jump ship unless they really screw me.

Okay here's the bad news:
Most insurance companies don't care about the dollar amount of an accident. An accident is an accident in their eyes. If they decide to increase your premiums, it will be in the ballpark of 33% for the first year and slowly go back down as it becomes older. The rate change will take place on your renewal.
Now the good news:
Most preferred companies expect these things to happen from time to time and your rate may not go up. If your driving history is otherwise spotless and you've been with the company for 5+ years they may not increase your premiums. Some companies now offer a form of accident forgiveness which guarantees your rate will not go up. You do pay extra for this optional coverage though. |

I can only comment that with my USAA insurance, a speeding ticket I could not go to traffic school about becasuse it happend on vacation in a state that diddnt allow me to, costs me now 15.00 a month more, for what 3 or 4 years, I am so mad, for that price over the years I should of flown back and went to court over it!! |

A base rate is the average amount of claims paid plus the insurance company's claims-processing fee.
