My family and I are just trying to get a ballpark idea of how much my sister's car insurance would go up if we made a claim on an accident she had.
She was in a mall parking lot and pulled out to make a left turn. I think she didn't really see a car coming, but I also think the car was zipping around the lot at a too-fast speed. My sister got hit in her driver's door and needs a new door and the frame of the car needs pulled out. There are no witnesses to really show who's fault it is, and I think it's a little of both judging by how much damage there is on her car (the other driver had to be going fast). There is no damage on the other person's car.
It costs about $1500 to get it fixed (just the bare minimum - a new door from a junkyard and fixing the frame, just to make it safe and sealed, there will still be some dents). We're debating on claiming it or not because there is a $500 deductible. She is 25 years old and hasn't had an accident before.
How much do you think the insurance would go up and how long would it stay up? Would it be worth it to claim it or should she just pay cash for the damages?

It varies carrier to carrier and state to state. You can call the carrier or agent and ask what the surcharge amount is for example for some carriers it can be $1200 and that amount would be for total payments make under both collision and liability. So if she has 1500 - 500 ded = 1000 the carrier pays she would not be surcharged. If she is liable and the other car sustained $300 she would be surcharged because the total payout would be 1300, Even if she isn't surcharged she may lose any accident free discount she has on the policy. |

For auto insurance the best way to get a great rate is do a rate comparison on car policies. Make sure that you pick similar options with the same limits, car type, location, etc so that all things are an accurate comparison.
What I always recommend is an internet comparison quote at http://www.lowratetoday.com since they have big name insurers and will give many prices on auto insurance polices. |
