How should I go about getting a learners permit?

I am 15 and in my sophomore year of high school. My parents were raised in a diffrent state and they never got permits because once they were 16 they could just get their license so they cant help me at all. What should I do first? I live in Texas.

I don't live in Texas, but I'm from there. Just complete a Driver's Ed course in either a classroom setting or with your parents and then take the test at the DMV. You have to bring your parent/s and a proof of ID with you.
Good Luck & Drive safely - I hope you do well! :0)
Btw, July's right about bringing the proper ID. Birth certificate and SS card is a must - knowing this will save you a lot of trouble! Trust me. |

In Texas, they call license bureau the department of public safety. Do a web search for that, and you should find the answer to a lot of your question on their website. Generally speaking, Texas has graduated licensing. You'll begin by picking up a drivers manual, studying it, and then taking a test. To take the test you'll need your social security card and your birth certificate, so come prepared. If you don't have those things, the website and the manual list other acceptable ids. Usually the test is multiple choice and on a computer. The test's pretty easy, but they focus on sort of meaningless details, so learn the statistics/figures the book lists. You'll get your instruction permit and be able to drive with your folks or your teacher. Eventually you'll be able to take a driving test and get a license that enables you to drive to and from school and work with just yourself or one or two other people in the car. By the time you're eighteen, you'll be able to drive everywhere with whomever.
Good luck. |

well you have to have a permit to get a license so go to the DMV and tell them you need a book to study. They give it to you. You study the whole book and when your done go back and say you would like to take the test. They grade it and if you did good you get your pic taken and asked questions and whalaa ya got your permit and hold it for about 6 months. Of course thats Indiana. Maybe its different for Texas. Good luck! |

For any teenager it's a great ordeal waiting to finally turn sweet sixteen and be allowed to sit a test which allows you to drive! It's a real coming out into the world of the 'adults'.
I had been waiting since I was five years old to get my learner permit. It would let me drive and go where I wanted to go. Unfortunately I'd be doing it with an aggravated and scared parent sitting next to me yelling "do a head-check, adjust your mirrors, turn on your indicator, STOP!!!!" about every three seconds. But this is just a phase your parents go through. Sometimes I think they're more scared than me!
Do your homework
It is the Texas DPS that issues the driver's licenses for all first-time drivers, regardless of whether you are 16 or 76 years old. Of course, most new drivers fall into the category of teen drivers in Texas.
Before you attempt to get a driver's license, you'll want to pick up a copy of the Driver Handbook published by the DPS.or click this http://www.dmv.org/tx-texas/driver-handbook.php This manual will teach you about rules of the road in Texas, and it will also tell you how to apply for your first driver's license.
Statistically, teen drivers are involved in a high percentage of car accidents. Because of that, first-time drivers should get all the practice they can before they get behind the wheel. Driver education and training can help make you a safer driver―and make the roads of Texas safer for all. Take the practice test here

Best thing to do is go through your school's Driver's Ed. program. The class is fun because you get to take it with people you know, the test is easier, less pressure, and if you get a good grade it may lower your car insurance premium depending on the insurance company. The instructor will provide you with your paper work to get your learners permit at the Department of Motor Vehicles. Once you finish the class, the instructor provides you with proof of completion, you will take it to the Department of Motor Vehicles & they will give you your license. |

Contact your local DMV office and make an appointment to take the written test. They should also have a study guide for you. Once you pass that you will receive your permit. |
