How silly is this when it comes to a UK driving licence ?

Hi Folks,
I was a naughty boy in driving home after a funeral, with a few beers inside me. No problem, no incidents, although illegal.
At a spot check, I was a tad over the limit, so banned for a year.
Fair play, but re-gaining the licence is proving to be a nightmare.
I had to pay £85 to a GP to have tests done.
Plus the £55 to the DVLA
No re-test required, but this blood test came back with some "Alpha-Gamma" rating that was 3 points over some mysterious borderline.
No licence, then
Rediculous !
I may of made a mistake in driving after a few beers, so hands up, and have done 60hrs of community service, in digging out a pond for the local Scouts. Plus the banishement of my licence.
That seems fair, I was in the wrong, BUT
My local GP says it came back that way as I am a bit aneamic
So another £85 to try again.
Gods, I learnt to drive when 13 on an old airstrip
I am a member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists.
I have a ticket that allows me to race vintage & specialist cars around Silverstone.
But I can't nip around the Co-op legally !
Any notions ?
Bob

i think that if someone drives after a having a drink then the license should be taken off them. It great that you stand up and admit you were wrong to do it. However, i think that it should be difficult to get the license back as a warning not to do it again.
Sorry if i sound harsh its just that if someone got hurt - yourself, a family member or an innocent member of the public - then i think you'd be in a seriously bad situation then.
I hope that you have learned from what you did and in time you will be allowed to drive again. Just remember, what you did it was illegal and you have to pay the price whether thats another £85 or not.
Best of luck but please dont drink and drive again! for everyones safety

If you can't do the time, don't do the crime. |

There must have been a bit more to it than just being "a tad over the limit" for DVLA to require medical reports . . .
With your apparently multitudinous skills and expertise you should know that.
Presumably you have informed the IAM as you agreed to. |

Bet you wish you hadn't driven while under the influence now eh
That does seem strange that they won't give your license back over a bit of anaemia though |

The way you learned to drive and your IAM membership were clearly not enought to make sure that you would not drive drunk.
For this reason I am very happy that the DVLA are being very cautious about your relicencing as you might be near me on a road sometime soon and I want to be sure that you are actually OK to drive.
The next thing to hit you will be the cost of car insurance and the excess they will want to impose - you might want to continue to use the bus anyway. |

You expect special treatment for that? |

I can say this because I don't ever drink and drive, never.
The simple answer is don't drink and drive, and as an advanced motorist you should already know that. |

OK Bob you have put your hands up to this..You have blown your trumpet about being a member of the IAM, you learnt to drive when you were 13 and for some reason you think its a qualification to drive vintage vehicles..You were lucky you had no incident or accident. There are many people young and old who are killed by drunk drivers you weren't one of them but you were over the limit it was only luck that you weren't.You did the crime now you must do the time. My comments may seem harsh but I feel they are fair. |

its all about the money. did you know that after 10 years if you dont renew your photo licence at a cost of £17.50, then you are driving illegally. they dont notify you that you have to renew and if you get caught out you are in trouble! what a scam. |

If you are really a member of the IAM then I hope you declare your offence. Once you do so I do not think you will be a member for much longer.
Suggest you just wait things out and get a bike. We can all feel safer then. |
