Getting my license tomorrow. I have a car, but the insurance is under my parents name. How long do I have to get my insurance under my name? Am i allowed to drive if I am not covered yet?

*By license, I mean driver's license. Not my learner's permit.

To the best of my knowledge you do not HAVE to get your own policy until you are a legal adult (age 18) UNLESS the car is registered under your name. I'm not entirely sure if there is a grace period until the insurance is fully registered (i.e. the official aperwrk is filed) but it is ILLEGAL IN THE US TO DRIVE WITHOUT CAR INSURANCE. |

You probably need proof of insurance to get your license. You should be insured to drive the car, even if the car is under your parent's insurance. Ask your parents to be sure.... |

All you have to do is make sure your parents insurance company knows you are licensed.
Depend on your parents particular policy, they probably have to add your name to the policy, but notifying them of your status is all you need to do to be completely legal and insured.
My policy, kids have to be added when they are old enough for a license (16), whether or not they have a license. But they don't have to be on there when they get their learners permit. Don't know the reasoning behind that. |
