How to change ownership on a car that I pay for and I have proof? The person thinks it's theirs?

Well, I went to a used car dealership with my mother(like an idiot, I shouldn't have) to buy a car. I needed a car to commute back and forth to school with. When I went to the dealer, I found a car, and I had to find the money to pay for it. I paid $1500 on it, and the check is in my name. The car dealer told my mom to put it in her name since the insurance would be cheaper, and not to have my name at all on the car. Now my mom is claiming that the car is hers, even though the bill is paid by me every month, and all my bank account information is on the papers. I even still have a copy of the proof of the check with my name on it to the car dealer. I don't want anything to do with this car anymore if she's going to be that way, but I do need the car to get back and forth to school. I feel that it's mine in every way since I worked hard for it, but unfortunately, her name is on it. I want to put my name on it somehow. What can I do about it other than buying a new car with my name on it(which is probably what I might have to do). Thanks a lot!

Well, the problem with having the car in her name right now is the fact that she's throwing it in my face since I told her I wanted to move into my own place. She keep saying "you're not taking my car anywhere, I'm gonna call the police for theft", etc etc, and yes I want a cheaper car. Everyone does. I do not want the hassle anymore with being threatened over an object that she doesn't pay for!
And she keeps asking me to give her the car btw.

2 options.
Take her to court and demand your $1500 back plus any cash you have paid.
Option 2 just stop paying and then let her deal with the repo men when they take "Her car"
What ever option you choose I would move out and never speak to her again.

It's her car, so let her start paying for it. Stop paying the bills immediately and let her deal with the fallout. Going to court is pointless since there was no agreement that she was going to pay back the money you spent. I would move out immediately and start your life anew without having your mom acting like an anchor around your neck.

If you have all of the proof that the car is yours, gather it up and take your mother to small claims court. Make absolutely sure that you have absolute proof, or the judge will kick the case out of court and the car will be Mom's forever more.
Bill of sale, insurance, paid check for downpayment (canceled), and your installment checks, bring your bank statements.

If I understand correctly, the title for the car is in your mother's name, but the LOAN itself is in your name? If that's the case, then take it up with the bank, because if you're name isn't on the title, they will be very upset, and they have their ways of fixing that. Otherwise, if the loan is also in her name, legally, she owns it, and there's not a lot you can do.

I am sorry that your mother would treat you that way. You might be able to get her to "sell" you the car, so you can title it in your own name.

Legally, the car IS hers, as her name is on the cars documents. But obviously as you pay for the car then it is technically yours to use. I did the same thing with my Dad, put my first car in his name to make the insurance cheaper. Which, on paper, made the car officially, my Dad's.
You can buy another car if you want, but what is the point? If you are still allowed to use the car then what's the problem with having your Mum's name on the documents? It is after all, saving you a lot of money. Because once you buy another car and put you're name on it you'll be paying a lot more on the insurance.

Edit: Ah, Ok then. If she is stopping you from taking the car with you to your own place, and refusing to change the name on the car's documents. Then if I was you I'd just stop the payments for insurance etc and get your own car. It's not worth the hassle, because if I moved away with my car my Dad would just go ahead and put my name on the car. Your Mum is taking it a bit too seriously, sorry I mis-understood earlier on.

That is very rude of your mother to say the least. You did not say how old you are. If you are under 18 years old you will have to have the title in someones name that is at least 18 years old. That you can trust! I know hind sight is 20-20 but can your dad or someone else help you get through to your mom? Does she let you even drive it.The best I can tell you to do now is if you are under 18, Keep all records of every payment, check stubs, Bank statements, EVERYTHING in writing so when you turn 18 you can go to court and get your car back and in to your name. Your mom will have No proof other then the title that she paid for it.The courts like to see Everything On Paper! You will want to keep making payment do to your credit score rating.
