How to sell or donate a car in CA with expired insurance, no pink slip?

A friend of mine wanted to donate her car, but she couldn't find the pink slip.
She tried the DMV, but they require proof of insurance in order to issue a replacement pink slip. She doesn't want to pay the couple of hundred to re-insure the car.
She'd like to find a donation organization that takes cars w/o a pink slip OR a junk yard that will come take the car (getting $ for it would be a bonus). Does anyone know where to look?
I'm sure this sounds shady, but it's a 93 Toyota Camry she used to drive in high school, and it hasn't been driven in two years, so we'd just like to minimize the expense of selling it/giving it away.
Additional Details
She applied for a duplicate title, but the DMV claimed she couldn't get the title without proof of insurance, which is a waste for a car she's never intending on driving again.

Their is no such thing as a pink slip. Go apply for a duplicate title. When title comes in take it to a place do donate. Otherwise park the car on a street somewhere until they tow it. |

She can cancel the insurance as soon as she sells or otherwise disposes of the car. If the insurance for the period when she does not own the car is refunded, then it will not cost her very much. (How long after she gets the insurance does it take to go to the DMV and then donate the car? A day? Even if the insurance is over $700 per year, it will still cost less than $2 for one day.)
Also, she should be able to get a BIG discount on the insurance because she does not intend for the vehicle to be driven. When I was going out of town by airplane for a month, my insurance company gave me approximately 70% off for that time -- and said that I would be covered for anything that happened to the rental car. |
