this is a extension to my previous question. Im 17 years old and want too buy a 2008 honda civic EX. I would like too start making payments on the car before i head off too college next year. So i need to convince my parents that it wont increase there insurance rates. My dad owns a 1976 jetta and i thought he could put me down as the driver of the jetta and put him as the driver of the 2008 civic so the insurance rates wont go up. is that a good idea ? Any other ideas how i can lower insurance rates? thanks

my family has travelers insurance. My family owns in total of 6 cars all under the same insurance. I was just wondering if i got the 2008 civic that i would be registered as the driver of the 1976 jetta and my dad would be registered as the driver of the 2008 civic in order to car insurance costs down.

If you are truly going to drive the 76 Jetta then it would be ethical to list you as a driver on that vehicle. But here's the thing, no matter what veh you are listed as a primary driver on, the premium for that veh is going to be high. If there are more drivers than vehicles in your household, you'll be listed as a secondary driver on either the highest or lowest rated vehicle. Check your policy and state guidelines.
You want to have your parents call their insurance company and make sure they are receiving all discounts available. Depending on what state you are in, they could get a discount if you will be going to school at least 100 miles away from home AND get good grades. Another way to lower the premiums is to see if your parents can increase their comp/coll deductibles. I would say on a 76 jetta, you should be paying liability only.

some insurance will give you a lower price if you have good grades in school. also i think state farm has this thing if you do a drive test for them that takes of some money too. never gotten a ticket. making you dad name on the car is a good way of not increasing it yes but its a better idea of at least letting him put you as secondary driver, because you dont want something happen on the road and hes not the one driving. |

being a newer car it will be alot dearer to insurance then your old one. if he insurances it they you won't be able to drivr it unless your a named driver. i'm 100% sure the payments will go up by 40-50% |
