I was in a major accident 6 months ago involving alcohol, and my insurance dropped me. What kind of trouble should I expect when looking for a new policy?

You are going to have to pay a lot more, but you should be able to find adequate coverage with a little legwork.
Go to an independent insurance agent. They have contracts with many different insurance companies - some of which specialize in the higher-risk customers. The agent can also arrange coverage through the "high-risk" state insurance pool if he can't find coverage in the regular market. Try a couple different agencies if you don't like what you are hearing from the first one.
To answer your "additional details" question, you need to see if your non-driving record may help. Here are some discounts that you may be able to get:
Good student (if you are in college)
Multiple policy (if you own a home)
Good credit (credit rating is a big factor in most states except FL and MI)
Drop collision coverage (if your car isn't worth much)
Buy minimum liability limits (if you don't have a lot of assets or income to lose in a lawsuit) |

There's nothing you can do to better your position, you got a DUI and you can't take that back. You need high risk insurance which is probably gonna run you a few hundred a month since you've proven that you are quite the danger out on public roads. |
