Husband got DUI...Insurance question.?
|
My husband stupidly got a DUI in March but our insurance still hasn't changed. I'm worried that when we renew our policy it will go up. I co-signed for his truck so I'm technically the owner also. Can I insure his truck in my name and just take him off the policy completely since I have a clean driving record? We would obviously have to lie and say that he doesn't drive the truck. Do you think this is possible?

1 You cannot insure the truck in just your name since both of your names are on the title/registration... the insurance must match the registration/ title in this case
#2 He is still a licensed driver in the household, although his license might be SUSPENDED (not a valid license), he still has a drivers license number linked to his name... and insurance must have him listed in the household since he is a resident relative
#3 Some insurance companies only run motor vehicle records periodically and might not quite know about this violation yet. You do NOT want to lie about this violation because it could create even more problems than good (misrepresentation which is fraud- and gives insurance companies the right to refuse a renewal or cancel a policy)
#4 Some insurance companies might just want to exclude your husband (meaning he cannot drive ANY vehicle on the insurance because there will be no coverage for him operating any vehicle). BUT some insurance companies could raise the rates or even drop you depending on the wording of their policies. If your policy or terms and conditions of insurance are "all drivers in the household must maintain a valid drivers license" then your insurance company can just non renew the policy.
Just be honest about this matter, because you do not want the outcome to be worse than it needs to be. Good luck |

if your insurance hasn't changed yet, its probably not going to. (unless he hasn't officially been convicted yet)Especially if you have been a policy holder for an long period of time. Sometimes they just turn the other cheek. However to answer the other part of your question. You can insure the truck in solely your name however in the contract you have with them, they have the right to then cancel your contract if they find out what your doing. They have numerous sneaky ways of proving that he drives it often. Personally I'd wait and see if it goes up. At that point you can try to take him off your policy and just tell them he has his own policy with someone else, with a different vehicle of course. Good luck. |

ok it will show up on the renewal and its gonna be costly for the next 3-5 yrs depending on where you live.
you cannot just take him off the policy as he lives in your home and is licensed and has access to the auto and is titled on it. SOME companies will allow you to write a policy and exclude him but that means he cannot drive any of the cars on the policy and if he does, they will NOT pay ANY claim and then if he is caught the company will most likely drop you.
he did a bad now he has to pay for it...sorry |

For the insurance to be in your name only, you have to change the title to be in your name only. If he gets in an accident and you've removed him from the policy you risk insurance fraud. |

While you may not like this answer, you should tell the truth. Every insurance company is different, and this question would best be answered by a lic. insurance agent.
In the worst case, your actions might be determined to be fraudulent, and after that, you might not be able to be insured at any price...understood? Especially if there was an accident...and what would happen if someone got hurt, and your insurance company didn't cover it 'cause you misrepresented yourself on the initial application?
Getting a DUI nowadays is almost like a bad speeding ticket -- there are company's that will take this into effect -- research and save...sorry if this isn't what you wanted to hear -- but I betcha you'll sleep better at night doing the right thing.

Your insurance will go up when it renews. Depending on your company and agent, they can take him off the policy as a driver, but if he gets in an accident they will not pay.
Your problems are only beginning. |

The insurance will need to be in your name only to be able to exclude him from driving.
Also note that if you exclude him and he does drive the vehicle and something happens, you will have no insurance.
Meaning if he injures someone in an accident and he gets sued for 1 million.. your stuck paying that Million out of your pocket.
It is called MISREPRESENTATION and insurance companies can and defiantly will cancel you for lying to them. After a cancellation like that in your record, have fun finding another company. You will defiantly be paying thru the roof after that. Up to 5X more!!
Be honest and take the hit. It will cost you less in the end. |

his insurance wont go up until you file an sr-22 he could also get what is known as non owner operator insurance if no cars are registered in his name but if you do what you said and he gets into an accident then you wont be covered. |

"Must be a democrat."
What a moron. Has nothing to do with the OP's question, yet you feel the sense of urgency to make a completely non-germane comment.
What the kcuf (backward) do you know?
What's wrong with America is the fact that people like you, Ms. Peachy, are brainwashed to the point of being utterly ridiculous.
But you speak of voluntarily giving up more of their money to the InsCo, even if there's a way for them to keep more of it. Are you a proponent of such redistribution of wealth? Sounds like you are. It happened not long ago, except it was "take from the average taxpayer, and redistribute to the failed financial sector execs."
Hypocrite.
Sorry, Ms. DUI Wife. Had to. This woman is un-American. Yeah, that's right. I'll say it. |
