I've bought a new car, still have the old one. Can I drive both on the old fully comp insurance until expires?
Find answers to your legal question.

I've bought a new car, still have the old one. Can I drive both on the old fully comp insurance until expires?

I've paid up front for the full year's insurance on my previous car, which lasts me till June 2008. I've checked & wouldn't get a refund if I cancel the cover now, and haven't sold it yet anyway.

The insurance is fully comp, so I am covered (3rd party only) to drive other cars with the owners' permission, but my question is whether there is likely to be a problem if I do this for 3 months, until the previous insurance runs out.. after which I will buy new insurance with the new car as my main vehicle in the normal way.

and also, would this still stand if I sell the older car?

My gut feeling is that it'll be OK until I sell the older car, after which I may find myself not covered, but I'd like any advice from people who know the insurance industry a bit better than me.

Thanks for any help.

Thanks everyone. It looks like I hadn't taken the fact that I own both cars into account.

I've now bitten the bullet and bought new insurance for the new car - you may have all saved my bacon! :)

Dont do it, you are not covered because you own the car.

You can only drive the original, or the new one if you tell the insurers to change it over, not both. Unless you ask the insurers to add the new one to your current policy.

By the by, the idea that your fully comp insurance permits you to drive other people's cars with third party cover is a myth, and has been for years. If you look closely at your insurance bumph, you'll find that this is only permissible if the other car is already insured and "in the event of an emergency" only. Insurance companies got wise long ago to little Johnny using the fully comp insurance on his Corsa to drive dad's Ferrari . . .

Hi there. I am in the same situation as you at the moment. I pick up my new car next week but I still have the old one to sell. I am going to try to put my new one on the old policy until I have sold my old car and then update the policy to cover the new car. (Hope you follow).
If I cant do that this, this is what I will be doing instead, take a look and see if it might help you out too.

I hope the link works ok, if not copy and paste it into the address bar. I should take you on to short term car insurance 1-28 days policies.

No you must put the other car on your insurance. this can be done on a week by week arrangement with some insurance co.

Kev
even if you own the other vehicle you have to be insured on the car aswell as the old one a policy says you are insured to drive another vehicle if your insured on your car and the owner of the second car your driving is insured hope that made sense confuzzled me for a minute lol

You need to insure both cars as they are under your name. The cars are insured as well as you are too. 2 seperate things.

it might be best to add your new car to your insurance policy so you can drive both fully comp - that way you are definitely covered and its much better incase of an accident. at renewal, just cancel your old car, and continue your insurance with your new car - or cancel the entire policy and get a new insurance policy with another company if you wish to change.

You cannot drive both cars as you will not be insured.
As you are aware you can drive a second car at 3rd party risk as long as you are not the owner. However, I would guess that the seller has notified DVLC that he has sold the car to you and they will expect you to register it. If the insurance company make an enquiry in the event of a claim, and they will, they will find out you are the real owner and deny liabilty.
Why don't you just take out a new insurance and hope that you sell the old one within 3 months. After June you will have to think about insuring 2 cars unless you can get it off road.

No; you need to tell the insurance company to put the new car on the policy as well as the old. It may be in a different insurance group anyway.
The company will use any possible reason to avoid a pay out, and an insurance contract is one of utmost good faith; they have to have all the facts.

Hi, yes you are better off buying another policy for the new car. It's better to be safe than sorry with insurance. I've seen some pretty tragc situations where people lost everything by being under insured.

Good luck

yes you can drive both cars. however, you need to read your policy...your probably have only 30 days to add a new car to your policy. if you are in an accident after those 30 days, your damage will not be covered. also, if you are in an accident within the 30 days, you will only be afforded coverage that you have on your current car. so if you do not have any comprehensive or collision, your new car will not be covered.
