Find answers to your legal question.

I've not had an instructor or taken any lessons, but how do I go about booking a practical driving test?

I've passed my theory and hazards driving test but I've still got to take my practical driving test. I know that if you take lessons with an instructor, they'll book a test for you once they feel you are ready, but since I'm not going to use an instructor, how can I book it myself?

Also, is it possible to take your own car, one that you are insured on, or are you allowed to use one of their cars?

Absolutely not worth booking a test if you have not had any lessons from a registered instructor (even one lesson so they can check you out).
You will be wasting your money.

When taking the test you will either take it in your car or the driving schools car.

If you are adamant about taking the test then download the application from here

I had the same problem and told the driving school that I had taken dozens of lessons but had moved into the area and wanted to take my test.
They agreed providing that I booked 1 lesson before the test.
I told the instructor to sit there and do nothing while I drove around for the hour and his parting words to me were....If you pass it will be a miracle.
I passed and he became a believer!
Don't listen to the negative thinking idiot's on here.
Come on people when did you last see someone driving like a spastic attempting to pass the test.
Nobody actually drives like they were taught!

To book your test you go to this website (the same as the theory test) https://pt.dsa.gov.uk/tests/online_booking_1.asp

As long as your vehicle meets these requirements you will be able to use it. You will probably have to show that you are insured and the car mots/taxed etc;
a four wheeled vehicle of no more than 3500 kilograms (kg) maximum authorised mass (MAM)
capable of a speed of at least 100 kilometres per hour (km/h) or 62.5 miles per hour (mph)
The car or van must also be fitted with:

a seatbelt for the examiner
a passenger head restraint, this needn't be adjustable but must be fitted as an integral part of the seat - 'slip on' type head restraints aren't permitted
an interior mirror for the examiner's use

L-plates displayed on the front and rear of the vehicle but not interfering with the driver's or examiner's view
a speedometer that measures speed in miles per hour and kilometres per hour
The vehicle must be legal and roadworthy and have no warning lights showing ie the airbag warning light

On the website says;
You must bring the following items with you. If you do not, the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) may refuse to carry out the test and you may lose your fee.

an appropriately insured and licensed vehicle, displaying L- Plates (except for taxi and Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) part 2 tests), that is suitable for the purpose of the test
the appropriate theory test pass certificate (or confirmation) if you are not exempt
your appointment letter
both parts of your photo card licence. If you do not take both parts of your licence your test will not take place and you will lose your fee
if you have an old-style paper licence, you must take your signed driver licence and a valid passport - from 1 November 2005 no other form of photographic identification will be accepted
for a motorcycle test please remember to take your CBT certificate as well
If you misplace your licence, you must apply for a replacement from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), which could take up to 15 days. If this happens, you may have to rearrange your test.

I had a instructor but this is what i have seen on the website http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/LearnerAndNewDrivers/PracticalTest/index.htm

Hope that helps and good luck!

If you're that confident book a test for a few months from now but take a drivers education course or at least get some lessons via a instructor. Then about 10 years later take an advanced driver ed course.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way taking a drivers ed course not only gives you solid defencive driving skills or training but also a vehicle that you've driven and know some what for your drivers test but it can save you bucks on insurance too.

if ur in the uk u would be wasting yr money not to go thru a driving instructor as they are the only ones that can teach u what the examiner is looking for. u can use yr own car but it has to be insured for the examiner to use and also there have to be some modifications like an extra mirror. in the uk the test centre doesnt have cars that u can use.

You are an absolute fool if you do not get professional driving tuition, why do you think there are driving instructors who have to teach to a very high standard to pass all the test and get a teaching licence and have to be tested for their teaching every few years, don't think for one minute that the test is a pushover, you can take the test in your own car, cars are not provided, you will not be able to use a driving school car for the test because only an idiot of an instructor would let someone risk their car on test without tuition.

You apply to the local testing station for a form, fill it in send back with relevant information. You can use your own car as long as it is legally on the road, with correct insurance, tax, MOT etc. Do not forget that you have to have a qualified driver go with you to testing station and that they will have to wait for you to return.

you have to use an instructor,or you'll not pass.....they just dont show you how to drive, they show you how to pass your test...and get you out of any bad habits you have that will cause you to fail....
i have driven for years before i passed my test, but i only took 2 lessons,1 to prove to the instructor i was capable and the other lesson was during my test....
