I bumped a car on the freeway today..?

I tapped the rear of another car on the freeway today going about 5mph. Some of the rubber from my front bumper got onto her back bumper and there was a minor scratch which I don't know if it was caused by me. There were absolutely no major damages done to either of our cars. We pulled over to the side, I got out and said sorry and asked her if she was ok. She was in a bit of a hurry so she just asked for my information. I showed her my drivers license and gave her my phone number. I couldn't give her my insurance policy # because I did not have my card with me but I did tell her what company I was with. I told her to just call me so I can give the insurance info to her. We both drove off after that...I'd like to know what are the exact steps I need to be taking in this situation so everything goes smoothly. If there are any damages worth taking note should I pay out of my own pocket or let insurance deal with it?

Hello, well you should have made a police report so that the damages are documented etc. when you exchange info, its like your operating on good faith that shes honest etc. she could go to a body shop and have them put every dent and scrape on her car etc, running up the estimated damages. this all depends on what state your in and what the laws are, but she should report it to her insurance company, then they will call you etc. they will get your info etc. you should have an insurance card that tells you to contact your company within 24hrs of an accident? they will get all ur info etc. basically if this lady does not have imaginary neck injuries, her insurance company will bill yours, the lady gets her estimate, submits it for billing at your insurance company, she signs a realease, case closed! you could be funny and tell the lady like hey, i didnt hit you, i never met you, go make a police report. in most states, once you exchange info, its a civil matter, she will have to go after you in court, prove negligance, and make them order you to pay for damages. but hey, if you want to get it overwith, she and or her insurance company will be calling for your info to bill for her damages etc. good luck.. |

give her the insurance info, if she chooses to file a claim or not is her business, don't pay out of pocket, this is why you pay for insurance |
