I canceled my ins, and didn't renew the registration, do have to turn in the tag?

I canceled my insurance in December. And when I got the registration renewal form in January I didn't renew. Do I still have to turn in the plate to the DMV?

In California you don't need to turn in your tag. But without insurance or current tags the car must be parked on private property or put into storage. It cannot be on public roads.

You should put the car into NON OP status, so that when you want to put the car back on the road in a year or more, you won't be charged with past years of registration fees...just the current year. It cost $10 and there is a form REG 102 on the web at : http://www.dmv.ca.gov/forms/reg/reg102.pdf

If your car is out of commission for less than a year, then you would want NON USE status. a different form.

All states and countries have their own rules.

In New York you're required to first turn in the plates then your insurance company will cancel the liability insurance.
