Ok, so I got a speeding ticket on Saturday for 5 over, I haven’t gotten a ticket in almost 5 years, my driving record is almost perfect, I’m 25 years old. So, I haven’t been too sure about my car insurance, my dad was paying for a while, he stopped, so I made a couple payment and I moved and it just kind of disappeared, I know I’ve been very irresponsible and I will suffer any consequences I get. So I didn’t have proof of insurance when I got pulled over, the cop said it was fine, just bring it when I pay my ticket. So I’m fairly certain I didn’t have active insurance at that point, so I’m wondering now if I were to buy insurance right now and bring proof of it in, would I get in trouble for not having it at the time I got pulled over? It was just a citation? How much will my insurance rates go up for a 5 over? Let me know, thanks! PS. I live in Michigan.

If you didn't have insurance at the time you were stopped it's too late. Depending on which state you live in you are facing a heavy fine plus license suspension. Ordinarily for 5 over they might let you plead guilty to a non-moving violation but that's probably not going to happen now. Five over shouldn't affect your insurance if it's a first offense. Since it was Saturday I guess it wasn't in an active school zone. |

If you where not cited for lack of insurance don't worry about it. But you did get a court date for the ticket. Getting insurance will be a definate plus. And would considerably help with judge's discretion and sentencing.
As for Michigan's drivers laws the judge and the insurance companies know it much better. I would get insurance and keep quiet about the speeding ticket. It should not be on your record until after the court date. |

For car insurance the best way to get a very good rate is do a rate comparison on auto policies. Make certain that you pick similar options with the same limits, car model, location, etc so that all things are an accurate comparison.
