I don't have insurance but my parents do. Can I drive my parent's car without them present in the car?
Find answers to your legal question.

I don't have insurance but my parents do. Can I drive my parent's car without them present in the car?

Can I legally drive alone by myself as long as I have my parent's insurance card in the car? I just got my license and I don't plan on driving to work or school, rather just for miscellaneous activities. I don't feel like I should be paying for car insurance yet. If I get in an accident, wouldn't it just be as if my parent's got in the accident. So can I legally drive under my parent's insurance if my name has not been put on the plan as one of their children who drive. Is it OK for me to drive alone to run some errands now and then?
Additional Details
Would my parents incur additional fees for putting my name on their car insurance plan?

Call your parents insurance agent and ask. I think you are NOT covered.

u r not covered
but u can add u're name in the car insurance
as a third party driver

Nooooooooooooo Your parents have to put you on their insurance before u can drive legally. It is going to raise their insurance for u to be on it, but this is the law otherwise u will not be covered

I'm an insurance agent and the way it works in MOST states is that as long as you have your parent's permission to drive their car, you ARE covered. If you take it without their permission, you're not covered.

In adding you to their policy, they will have a rate increase. Being a young driver costs a pretty penny, however there are things you can do to lower that price, which will help you in the future as well.

- Have a B average or higher. You get a Good Student Discount.
- Take your schools Driver's Ed Program. You get a discount for that as well. If you can't get in - cough up the dough and take it at a driving school near you. It helps a great deal on your insurance.
- If your insurance company rates each driver on a separate vehicle (as opposed to driver averaging) then ask them to put you on the cheapest rated vehicle. (That doesn't mean you can only drive that vehicle, you're still covered to drive any on the policy).
- Ask about Accident Free discounts.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

In my state at least, you are good until your are 18. Then if you live in their house you have to be on the policy.

Your parents are required to list all resident relatives on their policy. So, I you live there, then you have to be on the policy. If you don't live at home and you borrow the car from time to time, it would be covered if you got into an accident.

If your parents add you to their policy, it will cost them more. Some states allow children to be listed as ocasional drivers if they don't use the car on a regular basis. This would minimize the hit to their premium.

Yes if you are old enough and have a valid drivers license from the state the car is licensed in.

If you live in your parents' home, they MUST have you listed on the insurance policy as an authorized driver. If you do not live in their home, you do NOT need to be listed as an authorized driver. The insurance follows the vehicle so you do not need to have your own insurance policy to drive their car.

You may drive their car alone as long as you have the appropriate drivers license and their permission to drive the vehicle.

Yes, if they give you permission to drive then you will be covered. Depending on your record and your risk, their policy could increase when they add you. If you are newly licensed it will go up considerably. You have to be listed as a driver, by the way, if you live with them and would drive occasionally.

In Texas, If it is their car and they have coverage, You may "borrow" the car without being on the policy. My kids borrow the truck when they move, but they do not live with me. If they did live with me, my insurance Co. wouldn't give me the choice they just add the juvenile whether I like it or not.
