I don't know what to do now....Do you?

I sold a Ford Sierra years ago. But the standing order of 20 pounds a month for Insurance Cover was not cancelled. My fault. and It's been going on ever since!
The Insurance Company will refund me the money if I can prove that I have not owned the car since whenever. The day I sold it I just filled in the DVLA form and sent it to them. I have no other evidence....I asked them to confirm the date of the change of ownership but they say it is confidencial info.
A couple of grande is involved so I really need to sort this out asap. Any ideas folks?

Mr Quack
ask the DVLA to send the Insurance company written confirmation that you are no longer the registered owner of the vehicle and the date it changed owners. I had to do this after someone bought my car, didnt send the DVLA form off and I got loads of parking ticket reminders!

Surely it is not confidential information to supply you with a copy of the form you signed. Send them some proof of ID - such as a certified copy of your passport or driving licence - and ask them to supply you with a copy of the form you signed.

Simply write to DVLA and ask for a letter absolving you of ownership of the car. It will have the date sold on it.

I've done it for cars when they've sent me tax reminders after I've sold the car.

Strange you didn't notice this money going automatically out of your account when you got the monthly statements from the bank, especially with it going on for years. Records are indeed confidential to outsiders, but YOUR records will be available to you. You will probably have to make a trip in person to establish your identity, but once you do you should be able to get something from the DVLA proving you sold your Ford, and when. Make a copy (so the insurance company doesn't 'accidentally' lose it) and go to the insurance company with your proof and keep on them until they cut you a cheque. Luck.

write a letter to the DVLA , and explain the situation to them , and ask your insurance company to get in touch with the DVLA, 2k is a lot of money so keep on to it!!

i agree with happy's answer. ring them again and you may get to speak to someone who knows what they are talking about. do you have any other documents for the car, i.e bills or reciept when you bought it.

I would go down to the registry w/my identification and see if they could help you rectify the situation. Do you know who you sold the vehicle to? They could give you assistance as well - show that it was covered under their own policy.

you dont need to know who owns the car now the comany should be able to give you a confirmation letter to say that the car was reregistered on the date that it was and this should do your insurance company

In the US, a change in ownership of the vehicle would be a matter of public record, and available to anyone. If I were you I would go in person to the motor vehicle bureau, and tell them you need evidence that you sold the vehicle. They shold be able to do it without saying who it was sold to.

quick way around it is to make an insurance claim for the vehicle.

you will recieve a letter from the insurers stating that you have not owned this car since blah/blah/blah

Problem solved

Weird,..have you never had letters every year asking do you want to insure with them again for another year?

And why has the premium never changed with added no claims bonus?

What a strange insurance company.

I would phone the DVLA again and ask them what you can do to prove when you sold it and tell them the reason why, there must be some way to help you.
