I forgot to put my new car tax on yesterday and parked in a Retail car park could I have got a ticket there ?

You must display a current tax disc if the vehicle is on a road repairable at public expense. a private car park is not such. As regards insurance, well that is a different matter, the expression " To which the public have access " comes in to play, all of a sudden your private car park becomes a place where you need insurance ! The thing to remember is Excise duty, the tax disc, is just that, so your driveway, the private car park and other private grounds are not funded by public funds

In the UK no because it is private land...but you would have been done if you had been stopped on the way there or on the way back...

(For those not in the UK, tax discs here are for either a full 6 months or a full year period, and always expire on the last day of the month)

I have been know to have paid for a car tax disc and have it stuck to the fridge for days even 2 weeks before I remembered to change the old one....ooops...and that is for both cars we have. I am relieved to say that I have never been caught out. I would say that you won`t have had any problems...I have heard that they give you a few days grace anyway (eg. the disc may be in the post).

Remember - in the UK you can now have your car seized if it is not taxed !!

Same goes for motorcycles !

Its not a problem so much in the UK now as all of the tax, insurance and MOT details are held on a central computer directly accessible by DVLA.

The only people that need to know wether a vehicle is taxed or not are the police, and they can check instantly on their own computers.

In fact, apart from legislation, there is no need to display any info on your car.

If the police were being really mean you could have got a ticket, as the retail park has direct access onto public roads. The same applies for 'private industrial estates' and car parks, if the public have free access , so do the police, and the 'law of the land applies'. But usually they leave you alone, as they have better thing to do, like hiding in bushes with radar guns to catch those doing 1mph over the limit

yes, its in a public place, you should normally get a couple of days grace, depends on the copper mind!

hi there so long as your car was taxed ishould say you would be safe as the records would show that your car was taxed next time try and display it asap

Yes u can please make sure you put your new disc in on time in future bad example to me as I am a learner motorcyclist.
Don't want you to get into trouble.

You could still be ticketed. And also, not all tabs expire on the last day of the month, many will have an expiration during the month, there just isn't enough room on the tab to put the exact date, your registration slip will show the actual expiration date. If pulled over on the 31st, and your actual tab expiration is the 16th of that month, you can be ticketed for expired tabs, most cops will let it slide with a reminder to get them soon, however, the risk is there.
