I have a 2000 Hyundai Accent. I think its Kbb value is around $4000. The car is paid off. I live in Upstate NY which has a lot of snow in winter, and in the hills. Comprehensive (with a $1000 deductible) and Collision (with a $2000 deductible) comes to an additional $80 per six months. Is it even smart to have comprehensive and collision on my car, or should I just have liability?

Figure this, if you get in an accident in which more than 2000 is done, the insurance only pays the additional amount. At most your going to get 2000. That would be your worst case scenario, the car is totaled and they give you 2 grand to pay for the rest of the car. The real kicker is, for most accidents, your going to be paying the bill or the majority of the bill. I would say either drop your deductible down, or drop collision. But perhaps for you 80 bucks is ok to spend every 6 months for some piece of mind knowing that if you did total your car you would still get a little bit of money back. (They might not assess the car at 4000 either. that's just a recomended value. Insurance often rates standard reliable transportation as only being worth 2000 which means you would get nothing.)
Comprehensive is nice to have if your car gets a stone chip, or you have something fall on your car or someone tries to vandalize it. but with a 1000 deductable, again, your probably going to foot the entire bill. Or you might get them to pay like 100 - 500 bucks. but really, who cares at that point? do you really want your rates to increase so that they pay an extra 200 bucks towards your damages? |
