My insurance certificate says "the policyholder, if they have a full license, may also drive, with the permission of the owner, any private motor car subject to the terms and conditions of the policy."
My dad just got a new Mitsubishi Evo, say his car was the last in the driveway and I needed to go to the shops to get some milk would I be insured ok driving his Evo?

The vital phrase is " subject to the terms and conditions of the policy." You need to read these very carefully. There's a lot of myth and rumour about this, most of which unfortunately is wrong. The insurers long ago got wise to this, apart from anything else you will find your T&C require that you need the permission of the registered keeper, that you are only insured for third party risks and also that you may only do so "in an emergency". |

Yes you are covered, most fully comp policies, or some 3rd party policies allow this as an added extra, will insure you (3rd party only mind) to drive any other car, provided you have the owners permission and the car is insured by the owner. In most cases it will not cover you to drive un-insured cars, another car owned by yourself that is not insured, or hire/purchase vehicles in your name. |

Yes, you are insured ;) You have the "Driving other cars" extensions on your policy. Not many insurance companies offer DOC cover any more, especially to "young drivers". Quinn Direct is one of the exceptions though.
As the policyholder, you are covered for your liability to other people (3rd party) while you are driving any other private motor car which you do not own or have not hired under a hire-purchase or lease agreement, as long as:
1 — The vehicle is not owned by your employer or hired to them
under a hire-purchase or lease agreement;
2 — You currently hold a full European Union (EU) licence;
3 — The use of the vehicle is covered in the certificate of
insurance;
4 — Cover is not provided by any other insurance;
5 — You have the owner’s permission to drive the vehicle;
6 — The vehicle is in a roadworthy condition; and
7 — You still have your vehicle and it has not been damaged
beyond cost-effective repair.
This extension applies while being driven within the territorial
limits and only to private passenger vehicles.
It does not include vans, car-vans, Jeep-type vehicles with no seats in the back or vans adapted to carry passengers. |
