I have a broken windshield and am wondering if it would be covered by my insurance?
|
I live in Massachusetts, I have Comprehensive w/glass coverage 0 deductible. My windshield has two large cracks on the left and right. The problem is, earlier last year during the 2 week period our insurance expired my husband hit a deer. We have been able to fix most of the damage out of pocket but our hood is still crumpled. Recently he lifted the hood and because it is warped it cracked the windshield. This happened while we were covered. Would the insurance company consider the glass damage part of the original accident (the deer) and therefore not covered? Or would it be covered because the actual glass damage occurred while we were covered?

It's worth the effort to file a claim. Don't give any details your not required to give. |

Here's the bottom line. You have comprehensive coverage with a $0 glass deductible and the damage happened while the vehicle was insured...it's that simple. With "full glass" coverage, the only exclusion is typically pre-existing damage (this is NOT pre-existing) and intentional damage by the insured (this was NOT intentional).
Your company obviously knows about the damage to your vehicle because they denied the claim...that damage still isn't covered, but it doesn't exclude you from future coverage to other areas of the vehicle.
This is NOT insurance fraud...that person that said that is an idiot. What is fraudulent about it? Your vehicle was damaged...the damage is covered and you want to file a claim. If you intentionally cracked the windshield, that could be considered fraud, but this is accidental damage, which is the entire purpose of insurance.
Also this will most likely NOT raise your rates. The poster who said that is correct that claims can raise your rates, but glass comp claims normally won't. With the companies I have worked with/for you would need to file an excessive number of comprehensive claims (of any type) in order to see a rate increase. Rate increases typically happen after at-fault accidents. |

It didn't happen as part of the accident. It happened now, when your husband lifted the hood.
Yes, they will cover it, but I'd suggest you fix the hood so it doesn't happen again, then get the windshield replaced. |

If the vehicle was covered when the incident happened, your insurance company should cover it. Be up front, no reason to lie about it if this is true.
With insurance carriers, you want to avoid any issue in regards to being caught in a fraudulent claim. Not only will you have problems with possible fines or jail time, but you'll have a heck of a time trying to find new insurance that won't be sky high. |

Comprehensive w/glass coverage then yes problem i see is you say insurance expired and not if it was done after if it didnt show up before damage then its covered window about 150 if you look into phone book and make a few calls they come to you many places fix it about hour or less |

I had a rock fly up and hit my windshield, it left a small crack that got worse in the winter as it froze. Anyway, I just called a glass company and had it replaced at my house for $169.14. It would have been $10 less if I brought it in (takes about an hour). Anyway, call the glass company and ask about insurance coverage. They know a lot more about it than we do. By the way, my car is a 97 toyota avalon xl. I think, since you have comprehensive, your insurance will cover it. Also, two other glass companies said the price would be $224 or $230, so I got a good deal.
If I were you, I would just not mention how it happened, if they ask, you can say, your husband used the car and now it has a crack. don't bother mentioning there are two cracks. They have to replace it if the crack is bigger than a dollar bill. If it is smaller, they may be able to repair it. And definitely fix the hood or hammer it out so that doesn't happen again. |

yes and no, if you have comprehensive insurance the vehicle is supposed to be in "good" condition, in fact a used car that you want to insure, many insurance's want you to bring it in and they will take pictures of the vehicle and note any dings or cracks before insuring it. Telling them the windshield cracked opening the hood, they might say it happened when the impact drove the hood backwards. It's a catch 22 if they come out to inspect the damage they will see all the other damage and you may or may not be reimbursed, but they will rewrite your policy noting all the other damage. |

Having the windshield replaced is not a huge expense, I would recommend that you pay for the repair yourself. I know you have insurance and that is what is is there for but when you make a claim even a small one insurance companies hold it against you and your insurance will go up the next year if not even canceled. Insurance really should only be used for large expenses for cars and catastrophes for homeowners. |

What is preventing you from asking your insurance company this question yourself? Only YOUR insurance company can answer this question CORRECTLY, unless you are trying to scam(lie) them. |

Because the accident happened with no Insurance, this is still part of the out of pocket repairs. I do not suggest to try to claim it because that would be listed under insurance fraud. Probably not the answer you want to hear but that`s how it goes. this happened to me also, had only storage comp on a sports car, took it out once with out upgrading back to full, And it got stolen.Still miss that car. like you I had to bite the bullet. |
