I hit my car in a parking gargage and messed up the gas door. My car insurance lapsed at that same time. I am now searching for new insurance. When I get insurance coverage will I be able to file a claim for what I did?

If you could, no one would ever get insurance until they needed it, it would pay, and then they would drop it again. No, you can't back date a policy to cover an incident while you were not insured. |

No. Accidents are only covered by an insurance company when you are covered by that company at the time and on the date of the incident. Most companies are going to take a look at the car and note the previous damage so that they don't wind up covering something that should have been taken care of before they insured the vehicle. If you do file it misrepresent the facts, it is considered insurance fraud, something you probably don't want to be involved with. Additionally, for what sounds like a small amount of damage, you might not want to file a claim regardless. Your premiums will go up if it was your fault, in most cases for three years, and the cost to you for increased premiums is probably going to be a lot more than the cost to repair what small amount of damage this sounds like.
