Find answers to your legal question.

I have a phobia of motorway driving, even though ive been on it for 2-3 times.?

my mum keeps nagging me to take her to a relations house, because their son was murdered. basically its on the M1 in milton keynes. Ive been there before aswell and i was driving. I got there ok but on the way back it was dark and began panicking i seriously lost it, went mental and took the wrong junction. i have had a licence for nearly 4 years and am absolutely fine locally.

Mum wants to go saturday is there a way i can book a motorway driving lesson with a instructor before than. I am a female and im 22, only driver in the house too much pressure on me. Basically i live in slough and need to go on the M25, and M1 im terrified.

thanks

that's not a phobia, it's a genuine concern. m-ways are risky places if your not confident. yes you can and definitely should book a motorway lesson soon as possible.

http://www.mapquest.co.uk/mq/home.do This is a really good site for driving directions. You can get to your destination avoiding the motorway

You're not daft, you're wise to be concerned at something you know nothing about yet. At this short notice, I'd suggest you plan a route using a good map to avoid motorways, or use another means, train or bus. Then, at your leisure, get some motorway lessons with an instructor, you'll feel much more comfortable with him/her advising you and you'll soon pick it up.
Good luck.

Talk to your mum and tell her you don't feel confident enough in your driving to go on a motorway yet and that you'd be happy to take her once you've had a few lessons but in the meantime, either you go the long way around on the A roads look at www.multimap.com or she will need to find alternative arrangements ie the train or coach. Tell her how scared you were last time and you've been really stressed about this. No mum in the world would try and make you do something that has made you so worried. And then have a few motorway lessons until you feel confident. I didn't used to like driving on the motorway when i first learnt to drive but when i moved miles away from my family i had no choice if i wanted to see them and now i don't even think about it. And take no notice of the arrogant idiots who make stupid comments on here, they are the people who cause accidents because they think they're brilliant drivers who will never have an accident

Yes of course, have you not heard of PASS PLUS???? Many driving schools offer it, and it includes motorway driving.

http://www.passplus.org.uk/modules/motorway.asp

Also, just be calm relax, have some CD's and a bottle of water, and keep to 70 MPH. Use the middle lane if there are lots of lorries rather than weaving in and out of different lanes, and stick to 70MPH as a constant speed.

Also it is good to realise that all the big lorries are limited to 56 MPH, so if you stick to around 70MPH,these will never ever pass you! If you go 70MPH, they will never pass you ever!

Also caravans and trailors towers are supposed to stick to 60MPH.

Remember to glance over your shoulder when changing lanes to check the blind spot.

Write a note on your dashboard with the exit number you will be using at each end of the motorway, and ask the passenger to keep counting the junction numbers on the signs, they are in the corner of each sign.

You simply must remember the junction you need to exit at, then you will not get lost. Line up for the exit 2 miles before you get there, so there is no panic at the end.

Not an expert...but it seems to me that relaxing when driving on the motorway involves 2 things.

1. Everybody is travelling in the same direction. This is unlike any other type of driving, and provides for collisions being of relatively mild impact. I have seen the afterrmath of accidents on motorways....but never seen one happen in 30 years of driving!

2. Everyone can see you because using mirrors is essential on motorways. Drivers are much more aware than when they travel on 'A' roads at 70 and never look behind them!!!!

You belong there as much as anyone else.

Hope this helps.

You can get extra lessons just call any instructor. I personally was just like you for at least a year after i started driving. I would sit in the slow lane and get off at the next junction if i accidentally ended up on a MW. You will be fine.

MADDY
Really feel for you, I have only been driving for two years, but even before i passed I had this bad feeling about them, sorry but just do, I took motorway lessons and they really did help, so this is the way i would go with it, I took more than maybe other drivers would have but for my own sake and that of my passengers and other road users it was money well spent because I felt more confident and in control. I only took three hours extra tuiition on them but it was top! It could also save your life one day. good luck and happy driving, remember this, it's getting from A to B not A and E!

Buy a TomTom. Set the destination with the option "avoiding motorways" and have a nice country drive with someone telling you where to turn etc.
