Yeah I'm gonna second Bardic's response - don't "check to see if his insurance to see if it covers you" cos I would put down all my money that it doesn't! Very few insurance policies cover other drivers unless you have specifically included them when setting up the policy.
Watch out for sneaky admin charges, yeah the policy might only go up a small amount, but you will prob get a £25 admin charge added on also!
Best bet is to weigh up the overall cost of your mates insurance, and the cost of fuel, and work out how many lessons with an instructor that could get you. If you CAN do both, have a few lessons first, then practice what your learn in your mates car.
Remember, it is against the law for him to accept any payment, or gifts, etc.. for teaching you to drive. You can however, pay for the petrol you are using, but he legally cannot charge you any extra! |

Your mate needs to have you added to his insurance as a named driver. It'll cost him extra, so you should cover that extra for him. Your accompanying driver must be over 21 and have had a full licence for at least 3 years. And don't forget the L plates.
You might want to consider that while your mate may be a good driver he won't necessarily be a good instructor . . . . |

Rules for learner drivers
Before you start to drive, you must:
hold a valid, provisional driving licence for Great Britain or Northern Ireland
make sure that any vehicle you drive is roadworthy and properly taxed and insured
It is important to learn safe driving practice from the beginning of your driving career because bad habits are hard to break.
It is unlikely that anyone except an approved driving instructor (ADI) would have the experience, knowledge and training to teach you properly. Learning safe driving habits from the start will improve the safety of yourself and other road users.
If you want to practise your driving with an accompanying driver, the accompanying driver must be over the age of 21 and must have held (and still hold) a full licence, in the relevant vehicle category, for three years.
As a learner driver you must display 'L' plates ('L' or 'D' plates in Wales) in a conspicuous position on the front and rear of the vehicle you are driving. |

Your mate needs to go to his insurer and ask to have your name added onto their policy. It will cost more as you are only a learner driver. It may be best to shop around if it's going to cost too much. I found the NFU the cheapest way of adding my son to my insurance when he was learning to drive. |

He must contact his insurance company to check.
You will need L plates.
He must stay with you in the car
You will both need a substantial amount of patience
Go to a school first. Learning to drive is one thing - learning to drive to pass your test is totally different and you will pick up bad habits. |

kaz is correct about the drivng rules100% but i dont see any harm learning in a friends car if your aware of any bad habits make sure you and your friend read up on them because its so easy to pick up habits like using the steering wheel incorrectly holding on to it as you turn corners instead of the right way of feeding it through your hands,e,t,c, i learnt for a good while in my best pals car and found it gave me growing confidence on the road and learning 3 point turn and rememberwhen parked on a street inbetween 2 cars its, signal, miirror, look over your right shoulder before monuvering, anyway treat it with your friend as serious but good fun be light hearted about it,NOTE,if you get used to your friends car very well its a tip to reccomend to any learner driver is to use there car on the driving test as you will be more confident in it,happy driving, ned |

Remember that if you want to sit your practical test in this car that some cars are not suitable for test, due to safety recalls. To make sure the car is suitable for test check the DSA website for a list of unsuitable cars |

get him to check his some companies add extra driver's for around £1 believe it or not and your freind has to sit with you at all times! and your friend has to have at least 3 yrs driving behind them !
hope this helps |

The safest way to make sure you have the correct insurance is for your friend to add you as a 'named driver' to his policy. The car must also be legal in all other respects (MOT, road tax etc.) and your friend must have held a full licence for a minimum of three years and be over 21.
I understand that many people simply can't afford many driving lessons, so if you click the link below you will find videos of things you will need to learn to pass your test.
Good luck :-)

in the UK i would check his insurance out to see if covers for you or any driver at least, L plates, and i read somewhere that you have to have two years driving experience before you can teach any one to drive? also check with the DVLA web site to verify that |

you will need to ask your friend if his insurance covers you, chances are it might not and if you crash his car then you will be the one forking out for repairs.
you will need:
- an instructor who has a full driving licence, can be a friend or anyone you want so long as they are teaching you the correct thing
- a car
- the car to be 3rd party insured
and thats all. |
