I have a question about my drivers liscense?

I left the states in July. My kansas dl expired in august. When i get back to the states i will be going back to virginia where i am stationed. Can i get a Virginia Drivers liscense, or do i need to go back to kansas and get mine renewed.
If i can get a Virginia dl, how long would it take to get it. Would i have to retake the drivers test.

It sounds like you are active duty military. If so, your license is NOT expired. Even though it may say so on the license itself, as long as you hold a valid DD Form 2 (a green active duty ID) or CAC (the new "smart card" ID that the military is going to) then your license will remain valid until you separate from the military & will have up to 6 months after separation to get your license renewed.
Also if this is the case, there is no reason to get a VA license. If you are active duty military, have a KS license, then the military has your HOR listed as KS, making you a legal resident of that state, not VA.
I was the same way & my license expired when I was in Korea. From there I went straight to AZ for 3 years. By the time I left AZ to come back to WV, to look at my license, it appeared to have expired almost 4 years prior & as long as I had a valid active duty ID, it remained a valid unexpired license.
If stopped by police & they ask for your license, you will also need to show your military ID to prevent them from trying to cite you for an expired license.
I amended my response adding the new CAC ID. It was only implemented within the past few years & I had totally forgot that the military was doing away with the DD Form 2. So which ever it is you have, as long as it is valid, your driver's license will remain valid as well. |

As long as your license expired less than a year ago you do not need to re-take the test.
Just go to the DL office in Virginia and they can take care of it.
