I have a small dent on my car door. Should I call my insurance company and file a claim?

I think you are better off NOT filing the claim. First, your deductible ($250 or $500) will have to be paid first, and if the dent is small enough, that will be most of the cost.

Secondly, a claim can make your rates increase with some companies, even when it's not your fault.

Most small dents car be removed with paint less dent removal (PDR) and the cost is usually less than $100.00. Typically not worth filing a claim on. You can find many places that do that in the phone book, or you can call your local dealership and find out who they use... these people are typically mobile and can come to your home or office to complete the repair.

Not a good idea. Chances are they'll cover it but they'll raise your rates too. Basically save up some money and pay a paintless dent removal place to do it.

depends on the size of the dent and how much your deductible is - probably not worth calling insurance co. since if they did pay on it they'd only raise your rates!

Probably not, your deductible may be more expensive than the cost to repair. Now if you know whodunnit then it may be worth making the call.

Lot's of pretty good answers here. Depending on the size of the dent, and if the paint has been damaged or not. A toilet plunger might work to "pull the dent" back out, if there is no paint damage then your OK!
If it's a real small dent then the plunger won't work, but "paintless dent repair" companies might still be able to pull it back out.
If neither of these work, then go to a body shop and find out what it's going to cost to repair it.
If it is more than your deductible (collision) unless you can prove it was vandalism (then it would be comprehensive), then you have a claim.
HOWEVER, if it's only slightly more than your deductible, then I'd consider paying for it out of my own pocket.
A claim might only cause your insurance premiums to go up.

Probably not - you have a deductible, which you will have to pay, AND your rates may go up besides.
