I have an unethical question- buying insurance after accident?

I got into a minor accident in a gorcery store parking lot with a guy who was parked illegally in a parking spot. I went home and bought car insurance. It was on my to-do list, mine just expired. So I cought a new policy for my new husband and I. The kid did not make a police report and nobody reported to the insurance companies. We are thinking of settling out of pocket. My question is could somebody buy insurance the day of an accident, wait a little while and put a minor claim in to the insurace. Would it work? Please spare me the moral views.

HUGE red flags will be sent up, and this minor accident will be thrown into the insurance company's Special Investigation Unit. They will learn what you did and file charges against you for insurance fraud. Suggest you pay for the damages out of pocket.

No, it's not going to work. Insurance companies aren't that stupid. If they see your policy started on the day of the accident, they will investigate and find out what time it happened. Even if there is no police report, there are other ways of determining the time.

nope, not gonna work. the guy you hit will tell them what time it happened and your company KNOWS what time you took that policy out. the company is NOT stupid and WILL investigate an accident you say happened right after you took out a policy. they have an investigative unit for these things. just pay it out of pocket and do the right thing and keep insurance in force from now on

It is tried every day. I suppose that sometimes it works and I also know that sometimes it doesn't work. When it doesn't work, it is called insurance fraud which I'm sure you know is a big time no-no and could land one in jail. Your decision should be based on Risk vs Reward.

Kizzy
That's called 'fraud'. Whether or not the vehicle was illegally parked or not, you still have the responsibility to avoid an 'incident' of this sort.

now lets see, the guy YOU got into an accident with was PARKED correct? so I guess YOU must have hit HIS car....and, if he was in a parking spot and PARKED and YOUR car was the moving vehicle, then of course YOU are at fault for damages.... as for cheating and trying to put the claim into your NEW insurance company - - - the one you did NOT have at the exact time of your "accident", of course you CANNOT DO THAT.... that is FRAUD and is an arrestible offense... basically, you had NO INSURANCE at the time of your "accident" as your previous policy had expired... so, dig deep into your pockets especially if the guy who's car you HIT is now asking for damages...

Tara,

You probably have better odds of winning the lottery then of pulling this off. This never works.

ANY time a claim is reported on a brand new policy the insurance company will suspect what you are doing and will put you, your husband and the other dude through a ton of tough questions. There are ways for the insurance company to get to the truth.

As an example, the last claim I had like this was in a mall parking lot. They didn't call the police. The guy bought his policy in the late morning after hitting another car at approx 9:30 in the morning. He reported that the accident happened at 3:45 pm. The Special Investigations Unit Investigator went to the mall Security guys and got the accident on video clearly showing it happened at 9:30am not 3:45 pm.

You are at-fault regardless of whether the other guy was parked legally or not. Pay him yourself and avoid the possibility of being charged with attempted fraud.

yes it can be done, but if you get caught, you,ll face insurance fraud charges and possibly jail time, and they,ll probably want to see the car before they insure it,so either way you may get caught,is it worth it,could it be worth taking that kind of a chance for, you,ll be to the one having to deal with this,i wouldn't want to try and go to sleep with that on my mind at night, good luck,i hope you do the right thing.

The Silent Ninja
You may be able to get away with it, but as others above me have stated - it's illegal and there's a good chance you'll get caught. My advice - try to work a deal out of pocket and leave the insurance companies out of it. If you try to make a claim, they'll probably want to see the cars (his and yours) to be able to determine the cost of the damage and they'll also want information on the accident - including the date it occurred (I don't think you'd be able to get the kid to play along). That would just to a plethora of problems that you don't want.

Since he was parked illegally, maybe you could work out a 50/50 deal? Or possibly even 75/25 deal (since you hit his car, but he was parked illegally). Either way, remember - a car is just a car and be happy the accident was only minor! =o)
