In the UK you have to have a valid full car licence before taking a test for Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) Class C1 (7.5 Tonne).

Probably not without taking a special test. The last UK Driving licenses that where issued with automatic rights to be able to drive a 7.5t was around 1996 if I remember correctly! I hope this helps.

If you have class C1 on your licence no problem.Otherwise you need to apply for a provisional licence and take a test.

On a full driving licence I believe the maximum is a 3 ton lorry.

no you cant i know this because i passed my test in 2001 and drove a 7.5 tonne lorry for 3 months before my company realised . It is a law change from 1998 that stops new drivers driving vehicles over 3.5 tonnes. you can go for a test for this class of vehicle (class c1) but you might as-well go for your HGV (class c). Hope this helps.
