I have just bought a car has no mot or tax have to get it home can i drive it?

it is tax exempt because of age and i am covered by my insurance to drive it, was gonna get it booked in at my local centre and drive it as i have been told you can if you are taking it to be mot'ed. thing is car is in london and we are in scotland edinburgh, the car is fully working just has bad floor panels and needs weilding hense no mot.Wondering if driving it will be possible cant afford a trasporter.
Additional Details
its my car but my husband who is a machanic will be driving it. It should pass its mot with a little weilding to the floor pan, car is fully funcional and drivable, only problem is rusty floor pans. We have been informed there is no limit to the distance you can travel to ur pre-booked mot station. Just for any1 in the same situation also that using trade plates can actually hinder the proses (we where going to borrow a friends) this would be totally illegal.

You have been 'informed' incorrectly.

The law states that you can drive an un-MOT'ed vehicle a "reasonable distance, to an approved Ministry Testing Station for a pre-booked M.O.T. test".

London to Scotland is in NO way a "reasonable distance".

Additionally, the vehicle is NOT tax exempt, there is no such thing. However, if the vehicle was registered before January 1st 1973, you can apply for a tax disc under the Historic Vehicle classification, which incurs no fee. You are still required to display the disc.

As it stands right now, if you drive that vehicle on a public road, you are breaking the law.

No! Even if age-exempt from paying tax, you still must display a valid disc. Furthermore, it sounds as if it's unroadworthy and quite possibly dangerous. The MoT exemption thing requires that the vehicle is roadworthy and is only to allow you to take it to a nearby testing station for a pre-booked test.

The only choice you have is either get it repaired in London and made legal, or trailer it to Scotland.

No you cannot. I know what you are going to do and I hope you drive safely. i do not care if you get caught

well you can but there is a risk of the police stoping you

The "i am taking it for an M.O.T officer" excuse is a bit of a myth,if you DO NOT HAVE the correct documents that are up to date then it is purely down to the officers discretion as to wether he should allow you to continue your journey,be advised that ,yes you will be breaking road traffic laws, but, who ever sees a traffic cop these day's,just watch-out for the cameras.

jimmy_hills_chin
even though it is a classic and you don't pay for the tax disc
it still has to have one
so if the police wanted to be funny you could get done for failing to display a valid tax disc
you can only drive it to the nearest mot centre providing its booked in
so if you drive to Scotland they may get funny about that too

Can't afford it?
Can you afford a big fine, have car crushed and 6 weeks off work?
Loads of people try stupid things like this and don't get away with it.
Trying the mot booking thing will be a disaster if you get stopped anywhere outside of scotland and for your insurance to cover you, unless you have a trade policy it will have to be insured by someone else.
If your fully comp policy states you can drive other vehicles you will find that it also says as long as you dont own it or not under hire purchase agreeement.
The car also needs to be insured for road risks before your policy will cover you to drive it.
You could get a quote from these below, good prices.

i wouldnt drive car so far , for the first time , you just dont know how it will handle such a long trip , it could overheat ,, a brake pipe could pop etc etc , i would trailer it home you dontwant to break down so far away from home , you could have more trouble than its worth , you still need an upto date tax disc even if exempt from tax and , if you know it will fail mot ,booking an mot just to get it home is not the best way really is it ,could you not get the work done in london , and get mot aswell then you would at least be safe in the knowledge that it is at least roadworthy and you may at least avoide an accident and not kill someone or yourself

lilmissdisorganised
No. You can only drive it to a prebooked MOT at your nearest MOT station.

I'm afraid, the law states that you cannot drive a vehicle on the public road, if you do not hold a valid MOT certificate, unless you are going to a local testing station. Also if the floor is in such a bad state, I would advise you to get it towed or lifted back, as if anything should happen (god forbid) your insurance will actually be invalid without the MOT. (check policy and you will see)

Good Luck

Why dont you get a bike ride it home. Forget about that car for awhile. Use the bike to ride around where you need to go. Get good at the bike. Make sure the bike is a bmx bike. Then go to mexico and get a taco (the tacos are the best in mexico) that will boost your strength. Turn the strength into the power of a bmx champion. Enter yourself in the XGAMES AND LAND A 1080 Spinning inverted backside backflip. Take that prize money and buy a new car.
