Call your local DMV.

If your state is like Michigan then you can get another temp for like 2 weeks.

The DMV in CA is now charging $50 for extensions. I guess too many people were taking advantage of the loophole.
You can get a 30, 60 or 90 day extension. If you need more than 90 days, it's a red flag and they will want written proof. Like a receipt that you're waiting for a part to come in.
