I hit a car after it lost control on an icy road. The driver is not the owner. Am I still at fault here?

The car in front of me started fishtailing and eventually spun out on an icy road, coming to a stop. I couldn't stop my car in time (due to the ice) and collided with him. Turns out the driver was the cousin of the owner of the car and was not on the owner's insurance policy. Do these details matter at all, or is it still pretty cut-and-dry that I was at fault? It looks like there's about $25 of damage to his car, while my front bumper is all shattered, and I'd love for the owner's insurance to pay for it as I only have liability-coverage. Thanks.

Yeah, you are probably at fault because you didn't leave enough room to safely stop your vehicle. Icy roads don't absolve your responsibility as a driver, icy roads mean you have to drive with increased caution and adjust speed and following distances accordingly.

Let the insurance companies duel it out - that's why you pay premiums.
My opinion? It sounds like you both were going too fast for conditions - but, unfortunately, you hit the vehicle in front - and that pretty much seals the deal.

Just tell your insurance company what happen and see what they say. But it does look like your fault since you couldn't stop in time. You should have been leaving a longer following distance. You have nothing to lose in filing a claim with the other driver's insurance, but they will probably deny it. If they determine it your fault, I'll go ahead and pay the other driver $25 for his damages because it's not worth going through your insurance for that.

The driver of the car is irrelevant. You hit it - you are at fault.

$25 in damage? What, did you snap the band on the other guy's fuzzy dice? All of the details you mentioned are irrelevant, except for the one where you stated you were unable to stop because you didn't leave enough space for the road conditions. You are 100% at fault. However is all you did was $25 in damage then I would just pay for it out of pocket.
